2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ preview: Germany

- Hyundai Motor is an official partner of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ this summer, and ahead of the month-long extravaganza we’ll be previewing the chances of some of the major European contenders.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup™ is taking place in Russia for the first time and 11 stadiums from 12 cities will host tournament matches. The opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia will kick off proceedings at the 81,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium on 14 June, with the final coming a month later on 15 July at the same venue.

To kick off our series looking at the major European contenders, we’re be assessing the hopes and dreams of current holders Germany. Joachim Löw’s side are looking to become the first team to retain the FIFA World Cup™ since Brazil won their second in a row in 1962.

Germany’s quest for glory begins in Moscow

With experienced players such as Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos and Mesut Özil alongside exciting young talent like Leroy Sané and Timo Werner, many pundits are predicting Germany to go all the way this summer.

Germany are in Group F, and will face Mexico, Sweden and South Korea in Russia

Germany are in Group F, and their first match is against Mexico at the Luzhniki Stadium on 17 June, followed by a clash with Sweden at Sochi’s Fisht Stadium on 23 June. Their final group game will see them take on South Korea at the Kazan Arena.

Can Germany win a record-equalling fifth FIFA World Cup™?

Germany are strong favourites to win their group, meaning they are likely to avoid a Round of 16 tie with Brazil and might face fellow Europeans Switzerland. However, their side of the draw is a tough one, and despite boasting a squad brimming with talent, the tournament certainly won’t be a stroll in the park for them.

Should they navigate their way past the Swiss, the team is likely to come up against old foes England or the side considered by many to be this year’s dark horses, Belgium. Meanwhile, they could potentially be thrown up against 2010 champions Spain or a Lionel Messi-led Argentina in the semi-final.

If Germany do reach the final, their opponents may be five-time winners Brazil or the pre-tournament favourites, France. Still, no one said winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ would be easy!
