Whether a short escape or an extended getaway, a road trip is one of the best ideas for a holiday with the family. Planning fun activities for every family member may be a daunting task, but with the right elements in mind, parents can guarantee their holiday is a success.
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a midsize CUV that has been equipped with a range of features that make the journey just as much fun as the destination. Combining comfort, convenience, and innovative technologies that ensure family fun on the road, IONIQ 5 was designed with parents and children in mind.
Thanks to its array of comfort, convenience, and safety features, the eleventh readers’ poll of German trade magazine AUTO Straßenverkehr named IONIQ 5 ‘Family Car of the Year 2022’ twice. IONIQ 5 won in both the design and technology categories, beating 81 competitors in the 25,000 euro to 35,000 euro price class with a boot capacity of at least 400 litres. This year, more than 10,000 readers participated in the online poll.
Enough boot space for a road trip
When packing for a big family road trip, it is always good to keep in mind how much space is available. That way, passengers can bring everything necessary without feeling cramped.
Thanks to its elongated platform, IONIQ 5 offers spaciousness for the whole family. With a cargo capacity between 527 and 1,587 litres with the rear seat backrests folded down, IONIQ 5 ensures that passengers don’t have to leave anything at home. There is enough room for more than just luggage, too. Depending on the type of road trip, holidaymakers can bring tents, a portable barbeque, or even a family pet with them.
IONIQ 5 also raises the bar for comfort and usability with its Smart Living Space interior. The three-metre-long wheelbase creates D-segment spaciousness in a compact SUV, while the entirely flat floor allows for ease of movement between seats.
Front passengers can recline their seats electrically at an ergonomically optimal angle and even activate the relaxation mode, which fully reclines the seats and brings up a calf rest for perfect lay-flat luxury. The backrests of the front seat have been slimmed down to give rear passengers more legroom. On top of that, the rear seats can be reclined and moved forwards or backwards by up to 135 millimetres.
The Universal Island, a moveable centre console, can slide back as much as 140 millimetres, allowing for even more freedom of movement between the front seats.
Having fun in IONIQ 5
What’s better than singing along to your favourite songs on a road trip? IONIQ 5’s wide, dual cockpit, featuring a 12.25-inch, full-touch infotainment screen and a hoodless 12.25-inch digital gauge cluster and IONIQ 5’s BOSE premium sound system.
Children – and parents – will almost certainly be using their smartphones during any road trip. To ensure they don’t run out of battery, IONIQ 5 offers a built-in fast wireless charger port with a cooling function that prevents smartphone overheating for added safety.
Travelling made way easier
It’s a real challenge getting lost these days, considering the sophisticated navigation systems found in our phones and our cars. However, identifying the most efficient route can still be difficult. Hyundai’s latest Bluelink® connected car technology and LIVE Services make doing so even easier for drivers.
For daily driving, Connected Routing delivers the most precise routes by avoiding traffic and congestion. This cloud-based navigation system informs drivers of the current traffic and road conditions in their area. Finding a parking spot is no longer an issue with Live Parking Services, a feature that identifies the availability of nearby parking spaces, as well as on-street parking price information.
When visiting a new destination, Bluelink®’s extensive database of points of interest provides information about local restaurants, parking spots, and charging stations and their availability. Even after finding a location, IONIQ 5’s Last Mile Navigation system guides users to their destination within a range of 200 metres and two kilometres on their smartphone via augmented reality or Google Maps.
An electrifying road trip experience
IONIQ 5 is Hyundai’s first model to feature Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which enhances family road trips with its electrified features. The platform gives customers the options between two battery sizes – 58 or 77.4 kWh – and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. E-GMP also offers multi-charging capabilities, supporting 800V ultra-fast charging as standard along with 400V charging without the need for additional components or adapters. With a 350-kW charger, IONIQ 5 can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes. Users can also add an extra 296 kilometres of range with 15 minutes of charging, making it perfect for long family road trips.
For charging on the go, IONIQ 5 is equipped with an innovative Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. V2L can supply up to 3.6 kW of power, turning IONIQ 5 into a power bank on wheels. One V2L port is located at the charging port on the vehicle’s exterior. The second is located under the second-row seats and can be activated when a vehicle is turned on. Thanks to V2L, IONIQ 5 can freely use or charge other electric devices (110 / 220V) when stationary or while driving, such as electric bicycles, e-scooters, or camping equipment.
Smoother and more comfortable ride
E-GMP also makes sure that drivers can expect high stability and predictive handling, so all passengers can experience a smooth ride on a road trip.
IONIQ 5 is equipped with a five-link rear suspension system typically found in mid and large-sized vehicle segments, giving it SUV-style sturdiness and stability.
Additionally, IONIQ 5 is equipped with the world’s first mass-produced integrated drive axle (IDA). IDA transmits power to the wheels, reduces axle weight, and enhances handling stability by combining wheel bearings with the drive shaft.
Safety first with IONIQ 5
When it comes to any family holiday, safety always comes first. For this, IONIQ 5 is equipped with next-level Hyundai SmartSense technology. The company’s cutting-edge Advanced Driver Assistance System ensures the highest levels of safety and peace of mind on the road.
When driving for long stints, it is best to take frequent breaks. Driver Attention Warning (DAW) monitors the driver’s attention level and provides a warning when inattentiveness is detected, letting the driver know when it is time to get some rest.
For even safer driving, IONIQ 5 features an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR HUD). By projecting relevant information across the windscreen, the driver can avoid distractions and keep their focus on the road.
IONIQ 5 is Hyundai’s first model to offer Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2), guaranteeing the highest level of safety for the entire family. By combining Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control and Lane Following Assist and utilising Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities, driving on motorways has become even more convenient. HDA 2 uses a front-view camera, radar sensors, and navigation data to control speed, direction, and following distance. While Level 1 HDA (HDA 1) maintains a safe following distance and keeps the vehicle centred, HDA 2 offer additional assistance when changing lanes.
IONIQ 5 also works to keep children safe. With Safe Exit Assist (SEA), IONIQ 5 keeps the rear door closed via electronic child lock if the car detects oncoming traffic from the rear.
