On its way to establishing fuel cell electric vehicles as an alternative powertrain for heavy-duty vehicles, Hyundai Motor’s local distributor in Austria, Hyundai Import GmbH, will hand over a Hyundai ELEC CITY Fuel Cell Bus to the country’s largest city bus operator. This marks the debut of the hydrogen-powered bus in Europe.

The Hyundai ELEC CITY Fuel Cell will be operated by Wiener Linien, which runs a fleet of almost 500 buses in Vienna. The ELEC CITY Fuel Cell will serve as the company’s first passenger city bus running on hydrogen from November 2021, when Wiener Stadtwerke will be ready with its hydrogen refuelling station in the district of Leopoldau.

The newly founded Wiener Wasserstoff GmbH will start the preparatory work for the installation of its electrolysis plant on the Campus of Wiener Netze in Wien Simmering still in 2021.

Hyundai’s ELEC CITY Fuel Cell bus is part of the HyBus Implementation programme supported by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund (KLIEN).

We are delighted that the Hyundai Import GmbH will be bringing our ELEC CITY Fuel Cell bus to Austria together with Wiener Linien and delivering zero emission transportation solutions to the residents of Vienna. By making fuel cell technology accessible for vehicles that serve passengers in urban areas, we are demonstrating that FCEVs have multiple use cases and serve an important role in our quest to achieve Progress for Humanity.

The Hyundai ELEC CITY Fuel Cell

Hyundai’s ELEC CITY Fuel Cell bus is equipped with a 180-kW high-capacity hydrogen fuel cell system, which consists of two 90-kW hydrogen fuel cells, which feature a durable hydrogen diffusion layer and electrolyte membrane. Meanwhile, its 845-litre hydrogen tank capacity is the largest in its segment, and its economical 78.4 kWh battery ensures it is an optimum form of transport for routes with frequent traffic delays or hilly road conditions as well as long distance driving.
