Hyundai Launches World's First Contactless Car for Stand Up To Cancer

Hyundai Motor UK is partnering with Stand Up To Cancer, a joint national fundraising campaign between Cancer Research UK and the television station Channel 4, with a unique fundraising initiative. A zero-emission Hyundai IONIQ Electric vehicle is being converted into a ‘Contactless Car’ – giving members of the public a new, quick and convenient way to donate to charity with just a tap of their credit or debit cards.
The car will feature five contactless donation points embedded seamlessly into the IONIQ’s panels. Each donation of either £5 or £10 will trigger an automatic ‘thank you’ via an audio or visual cue, or an electronic movement from the car. The IONIQ’s number plates will also become a digital totaliser which will increase every time someone donates.

Specialist technology in the custom-built Contactless Car

As part of their 2016 fundraising efforts, Stand Up to Cancer raised 25% of income through contactless donations. Now Hyundai Motor has worked with specialist technology and fabrication partners for the custom-made Contactless Car. Ardunio micro-controllers and Raspberry Pi micro-computers ensure that the car will react instantly to every contactless donation. The readers will also be linked to the LED totaliser built into the front and rear numberplates displaying the donation live total.
The contactless IONIQ supports Hyundai Motor UK’s mission to help Stand Up To Cancer to raise vital funds for revolutionary life-saving research. 980 people are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK and the money raised through this initiative will go towards ‘translational research’ aiming to transfer breakthroughs in the lab into revolutionary new treatments.
The Hyundai IONIQ has added another world-first to its list of innovations, and is helping to support a worthy charitable cause in the UK.
We are extremely proud to be supporting Cancer Research UK this year as an official partner of Stand Up To Cancer, and we’re helping in the way that we know best - with innovation. Cancer doesn’t discriminate; one in two people born after 1960 will be diagnosed with the disease at some point in their lifetime. But our world-first Contactless Car will be designed to make joining the rebellion against cancer as easy, convenient, and as engaging as possible. I hope that people will come together, with their cards at the ready, and give generously to such an important cause that will save lives across the UK.

The Contactless Car will be on display for the first time at London’s King’s Cross station on May 22nd before it is driven across the UK to appear at Hyundai and Stand Up To Cancer events between May and November.
In addition, a photo booth inside the car will allow generous donors to instantly print a picture and stick it to the car’s exterior. Eventually, the car will be completely covered creating a mobile mosaic of images of those who’ve made a kind contribution.
Members of the public will be encouraged to #DriveTheRebellion against cancer by taking inspiration from this exciting and innovative fundraising initiative and donating to vital research. Stand Up To Cancer has raised more than £38 million (€45 million) since its launch in 2012 and has gained support from world-famous celebrities including Naomi Campbell, Idris Elba, Pharrell Williams, and Andy Murray.
The specially-built IONIQ Electric will be the world’s first contactless car and adds to the Hyundai IONIQ range’s pioneering ethos. The IONIQ is the world’s first eco-friendly model to offer three electrified powertrains in a single body type. With 13 prestigious accolades including Car of the Year 2017 in Norway, and Sweden, the IONIQ is also one of the most decorated cars in Europe.
