Hyundai Motor handed over an ix35 Fuel Cell car to the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) in Antwerp, Belgium.
The FCH JU is a public-private partnership which supports research, technological development and demonstration activities in the fuel cell and hydrogen energy technology sectors in Europe and is backed by the European Commission. During the next four years the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell supplied will be presented to EU decision-makers, stakeholders and the general public at demonstration drives and public events across Europe.
The fact that the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell has been chosen for the fourth time by an organisation backed by the European Commission, illustrates our capability to provide clean mobility solutions and our leadership in hydrogen-powered cars. By the end of 2016, 400 Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell will be on European roads. Hyundai Motor and the FCH JU will continue to work together to further facilitate hydrogen and fuel cell technology in Europe

Thomas A. Schmid Chief Operating Officer at Hyundai Motor Europe

To support the ongoing development of fuel cell technology, Hyundai Motor Europe has been working with the FCH JU since 2011. Hyundai Motor began supplying the ix35 Fuel Cell to the public-private partnership in 2013 for research and development as well as presentation activities.
The FCH JU is delighted to again receive the keys of the ix35 Fuel Cell, to demonstrate the real-world benefits of hydrogen fuel cell technology. Raising awareness around fuel cells and hydrogen is essential to enable their market uptake. This collaboration with Hyundai will allow more people to experience this innovative technology and acknowledge how easy it is to switch towards zero-emission transportation.

Bart Biebuyck Executive Director FCH JU

Several Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell cars have been leased in the past few years by public and private fleets, primarily in Europe, where the European Union has created a hydrogen roadmap and initiated the construction of hydrogen fuelling stations. Public authorities in Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and the UK are already running Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell cars.
The ix35 Fuel Cell is the world’s first mass-produced and commercially available fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). Currently there are about 400 Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell cars on European roads in 12 countries - in other words: more than 75% of all the FCEVs operating in Europe. Its powerful asynchronous electric motor generates 100 kW (136 PS), and with a maximum torque of 300 Nm it delivers a fun-to-drive experience (Electric engine / Fuel Cell (100 kW (136 PS)): Fuel efficiency combined: 0.95 kg/100 km; urban: 0.89 kg/100 km; extra-urban: 0.99 kg/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km). Thanks to its efficiency, the ix35 Fuel Cell’s range is up to 594 kilometres on a full tank.
