The unsurpassed customer appeal and broad depth of ability in Hyundai's new model line-up has been critically acclaimed yet again, with the all-electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 named Best Family Car and the Hyundai i20 N taking the Best Performance Car accolade at the 2022 UK Car of the Year Awards.
The UK Car of the Year Awards represents a unique challenge for the automotive industry each year. Twenty-nine highly experienced judges who write for titles such as Top Gear Magazine, The Sunday Times, The Daily Express, The Telegraph, CAR, Auto Express, BusinessCar, The Independent, Evo and many more determine the winning cars.
Time spent at the wheel of the new Hyundai IONIQ 5 left the judges in no doubt about its multitude of talents.
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 blazes an EV trail. Innovative, desirable, practical, and brilliantly designed to make full use of its electric-only platform. Quite where Hyundai has found so much space inside a family car is a mystery, but one we’re more than happy to ponder for many years to come.
The 2022 UK Car of the Year Best Family Car title is the latest in a long line of award triumphs for the ground-breaking Hyundai IONIQ 5. Endowed with its stand-out design, an all-electric range of up to 481 kilometres and the ability to rapid recharge from 10-80 per cent in just 18 minutes, it has become a popular offering across Europe.
Since its introduction in 2021, Hyundai’s rally-inspired i20 N has always punched well above its 1,190-kg weight. However, to win the coveted UK Car of the Year Best Performance Car title, the i20 N had to compete against a line-up of established sports cars with performance far beyond its usual hot hatch competitors.
“The Hyundai i20 N is quite the performer at an affordable price,” observed the judges, acknowledging the car’s breath-taking 6.2-second 0-62mph acceleration time afforded by the efficient 204 PS 1.6 T-GDi petrol engine.
A wicked little hot hatch.

Marriage has considerable experience of the Hyundai i20 N and led Top Gear’s judging panel when it named the Hyundai i20 N ‘Top Gear Speed Week Champion’ and ‘Top Gear Car of the Year’ in 2021.
Winning a UK Car of the Year category award is a significant achievement for any brand, and we are therefore delighted to win not one but two category awards this year. IONIQ 5 once again stands out due to its stand-out design, state-of-the-art electric platform and segment-leading technology features. Meanwhile, i20 N perfectly illustrates our spirit of technological process, which combines high-performance with everyday practicality.
The sleekly-styled Hyundai IONIQ 5 pays homage to the marque's design heritage whilst focusing on delivering the future of electric mobility. Thanks to Hyundai's industry-disrupting new Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), IONIQ 5 provides faster charging times, increased driving range, enhanced handling, and superior interior space. The modular, flat-floor E-GMP has also enabled Hyundai’s designers to revolutionise the car interior. IONIQ 5 redefines what is possible with a completely new in-car experience and living space, offering sustainable materials, fully flexible seating, and numerous custom options.
The comprehensively-equipped Hyundai i20 N builds on the strengths of Hyundai's renowned, performance-focused N brand and the success of the acclaimed i20. A true sporting icon, i20 N also takes inspiration and engineering values from the multiple-rally-winning i20 Coupe WRC car. It’s equally at home delivering its unique brand of exhilarating performance both on the road and racetrack.
