5 things you can do with an i30 N you can’t do with a normal hatchback

The i30 N is Hyundai Motor’s first high-performance car under the N line-up. Built on the i30 five-door, this versatile model is equipped with exciting features to ensure it delivers on road or track.

Developed and tested at Hyundai Motor’s European Test Centre, the i30 N’s designers worked closely with aerodynamic specialists to create the best possible driving experience. Here are five features that distinguish the car from ordinary hatchbacks.

The versatile i30 N is perfectly suited for road or track

The i30 N is an everyday sports car that has been developed from the ground up to deliver maximum driving pleasure, whether drivers are making their early morning commute to the office during rush-hour on a weekday, or unleashing it on the track for high-performance racing at the weekend. This Race Track Capability means it can be driven hard on the circuit fresh from the showroom – without the need for expensive modifications. The i30 N proved its durability in the most challenging race in the world earlier this year, at the ADAC 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.
Hyundai Motor was encouraged to develop the i30 N following Hyundai Motorsport’s success in the World Rally Championship. This influence is seen throughout the vehicle’s design, including the Performance Blue paintwork inspired by the team’s i20 WRC rally cars. Features like aggressive bumpers and the rear spoiler apply racing dynamics by using natural airflow to reduce turbulence and lift, providing better balance at speed. Meanwhile, the i30 N’s brakes are built to last, and feature an extra cooling function through the air intakes on its front bumper. With a large-sized disc and strengthened caliper, the standard brakes are strong enough for the race circuit.

The i30 N is a real Corner Rascal

The i30 N has the fascinating stability of high-speed braking and turn-in into a corner, and can keep a fast mid-corner speed which allows the driver to start accelerating early onto the straight. Thanks to new technology developed in-house by Hyundai’s ‘N-gineers’ such as the N Corner Carving Differential (E-LSD), the i30 is a true Corner Rascal. E-LSD provides a unique carving feel throughout every corner, and enhances handling by stabilizing the car at braking, during turn-in and exiting corners. The newly-developed N Power Sense front axle allows drivers to feel the pedal-to-the-metal power at the steering wheel. Finally, the i30 N achieves maximum grip through its specially-developed 19-inch Pirelli P Zero HN code tyres.

Enjoy more smiles per kilometer with the N Grin Control System

One of the i30 N’s most exciting features is its N Grin Control System, so named after the contented ‘grin’ drivers experience as they accelerate around a race track. It gives drivers the choice of five distinctive drive modes to match their mood, including Eco, Normal, Sport, N and N Custom settings, each of which changes the character of the car and allows drivers to select a high-performance component to match their driving preferences or adapt to a changing road and weather conditions. These can be selected with a flick of the two dedicated buttons on the steering wheel.
With a top speed of 250 km/h and going from 0-100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds, the i30 N is no slouch. It achieves this pace through its powerful T-GDi engine, which generates 353 Nm torque from 1,500-4,700 revs per minute (RPM), which rises to a maximum of 378 Nm when in overboost.

Its variable exhaust valve system delivers emotional sound

With the i30 N, Hyundai Motor has delivered a vehicle that emphasises driving pleasure. It is designed to make the driver’s heart beat faster when he or she gets behind the wheel. Rather than simply measuring RPM, the company decided to focus on heartbeats per minute (BPM). So, when drivers hit the throttle and shift through the gears on a picturesque winding road they will elicit a smile as they listen to the roar of the engine. The i30 N’s rev matching function automatically adjusts the revs on the engine when the driver shifts from a higher to a lower gear and supports smooth gear shifting. Its variable exhaust valve system enhances enjoyment with the crackle of the dual muffler exhaust.

Live performance tracking

The i30 N’s cockpit features an 8-inch free-floating screen that showcases key performance parameters through a number of different modes, in addition to satellite navigation and entertainment features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s on race days when the high-performance driving data function truly comes into its own, as drivers can record their lap times and live-track the cornering forces they experience, thanks to the G-Force meter.
