Record market share for Hyundai Motor Europe in October

• Hyundai outpaced market trend and achieved a 4.5 per cent market share in October
• Company led Spanish market for first time in history – reaching 5,844 units and record market share of 9.9 per cent
• Hyundai ranked number one among import brands for the third time in a row in Germany, and third among import brands in French market
• Successful sales drivers include TUCSON, the second best-selling Hyundai model in its segment in Europe so far in 2021

The company led the Spanish market for the first time in history last month, while in Germany, Hyundai ranked number one among import brands for the third time in a row. Hyundai also achieved a record market share in Italy, and enjoyed increased market shares in the UK and France.

The company recorded a total of 43,629 vehicle registrations across the European Union, EFTA and UK in October, an increase of 11 per cent compared to the same month in 2020, and bucking the overall market trend of -29.3 per cent. Between January and October, Hyundai registered 427,015 units, up 22.7 per cent year-on-year, compared to 2.7 per cent for the industry as a whole.

Hyundai celebrates record market shares in key European markets

For the first time ever, Hyundai managed to lead the Spanish market in October, selling 5,844 units. This allowed the company to achieve a market share of 9.9 per cent, the highest ever in Spain. These results represent a growth of 57.4 per cent compared to the same month in 2020. Cumulatively, Hyundai sold 42,534 units in Spain between January and October this year, representing a 6.4 per cent market share and a year-on-year growth of 29.4 per cent, compared to 5.6 per cent for the rest of the market. These encouraging results keep Hyundai in sixth place in Spain for the year as a whole, and make the company the fastest-growing brand in the top 10.

After two strong months in August and September, Hyundai increased its market share in Germany to 4.5 per cent in October with 8,096 registrations. As well as outpacing the overall market trend, this result heralds the company’s best-ever October monthly result in Europe’s biggest car market. The cumulative results are also positive for the automaker in Germany. Hyundai sold 87.869 vehicles from January to October representing 4.0 per cent market share. This means an increase of 0.4 percentage points compared to the corresponding equivalent period last year.

Thanks to these strong monthly results, Hyundai is once again the most successful importer in Germany, for the third time in a row. Thanks to the strong availability of all Hyundai models in showrooms, Hyundai is looking to the final months of 2021 with confidence, despite negative forecasts for the overall market.

In Italy, Hyundai celebrated another record month, with a 4.3 per cent market share. This represented a year-on-year increase of 7.2 per cent, compared to -35.7 per cent for the overall market. The company was also up from January to October with 38,781 units registered in the country so far this year, representing a 33.62 per cent increase compared to the same period for 2020. This gives Hyundai a year-to-date market share of 3.06 per cent, up from 2.58 per cent in 2020.

Hyundai also enjoyed fantastic sales in the UK in October, with 5,447 registrations – a 34% per cent increase on October 2020 – for a record market share of 4.1 per cent. Hyundai’s January to October year-to-date registrations stood at a total of 58,372 units, up 39% compared to the same period last year, to reflect a market share of 3.4 per cent.

Meanwhile, in France, Hyundai sold 3,593 units last month – an 11 per cent increase on October 2020 – for a market share of 2.7 per cent, which is the best-ever performance by the brand since Hyundai Motor France became a subsidiary in 2012. This means that from January to October, the company registered a total of 37,868 vehicles in the country, up 29 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year, for a year-to-date market share of 2.2 per cent.

TUCSON and IONIQ 5 drive Hyundai’s success

Hyundai’s success across Europe can be attributed to various factors. These include an overwhelmingly positive reception for IONIQ 5, the company’s fully-electric midsize CUV, which launched in June. In addition, compact SUV TUCSON has also enjoyed its first full year on the market in 2021, and is currently the second best-selling car in its segment in Europe. Both models recently received the maximum five-star overall rating in the Euro NCAP safety test.

TUCSON (1,856 units) and the i20 (1,139 units) were the main contributors to Hyundai’s strong sales figures in Spain. In the period from January to October, TUCSON led the C-SUV segment with 16,730 units sold – a year-on-year growth of 82.8 per cent – making it the second best-selling model in the Spanish market.
