- Following a hugely successful 2017 fundraising partnership with Stand Up To Cancer, with donations over £150,000, Hyundai has revealed the next phase of its support for the campaign
- During February, Hyundai UK will give £50 to Stand Up To Cancer for every test drive of one of its vehicles
- The fundraising partnership started early in 2017, led by the world-first Contactless Car, a Hyundai IONIQ Electric fitted with five contactless donation points
- Double-Olympic Champion Nicola Adams OBE and TV presenter Jake Humphrey launched the Contactless Car at an event in London’s King’s Cross station
- Hyundai employees and ambassadors worked tirelessly throughout the year to raise funds for Stand Up To Cancer’s game-changing research into new cancer treatments and tests
For the next step in the partnership, Hyundai will be donating £50 for every test drive carried out between February 1st – February 28th. With around 1,200 test drives taken in February 2017, Hyundai Motor UK predicts the initiative will raise a further £60,000 for Stand Up To Cancer.
The star of the Hyundai and Stand Up To Cancer partnership was the world-first Contactless Car – a special Hyundai IONIQ Electric outfitted with five contactless donation points. Members of the public could simply walk up to the car and tap one of the points with a contactless card or device to donate either £5 or £10 to Stand Up To Cancer.
The car was first launched by double-Olympic Champion Nicola Adams and TV presenter and Hyundai UK Brand Ambassador Jake Humphrey at King’s Cross station, housed in a specially built boxing ring. All those that tapped to donate were given a ‘thank you’ flash of the car’s lights and allowed inside the car to have their photo taken using the in-car photo booth. Controlled using the car’s pedals, the booth is linked to a printer which produces an image that can be stuck to the outside of the car, creating a mosaic of faces.
From its launch at King’s Cross, the Contactless Car headed on a nationwide tour, and then on to a select number of Hyundai retailers, where it was on display for customer donations.
Hyundai Motor UK also supported Stand Up To Cancer’s Great Canoe Challenge last September, as participants canoed a marathon a day through North West England. Hyundai provided four logistics vehicles and supported the paddlers on-event with both Hyundai UK brand ambassador Jake Humphrey and Hyundai UK’s Head of Brand Strategy, Adam Nickson, both completing a whole day of canoeing.
A number of Hyundai UK employees were involved in other ways, raising more than £60,000 through taking part in the 24-hour Three Peaks Challenge, the Bear Grylls Survival Race, Windsor Half Marathon and the Seed Fund Challenge. During this Challenge, a team of Hyundai employees turned £700 of seed money into more than £36,000 in just two weeks – one of the most successful Seed Fund Challenges ever for Stand Up To Cancer. Hyundai’s dealerships have also been involved in raising funds, with many selling Stand Up To Cancer merchandise throughout 2017, and running activities such as a local charity auctions.
We're incredibly proud of the amount raised with Stand Up To Cancer this year thanks to our #DriveTheRebellion campaign. From the Contactless Car, through our employees and through generous donations from the public we've contributed over £150,000 towards Stand Up To Cancer's vital research to find new and better treatments for patients. But we realise there's a long way to go, and that's why we're continuing our Stand Up To Cancer partnership with the help of our retail partners in 2018.
Stand Up To Cancer unites the nation to raise funds for ground-breaking research that will bring new treatments and tests to patients faster. It's fantastic working with Hyundai because they share our vision to find new ways to raise money while giving our supporters an entertaining and engaging experience. The contactless car was a brilliant innovation and everyone at Hyundai really got behind the campaign in 2017.
