Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center (HMETC) is planning to build a 25,000-square-metre comprehensive hub in Rüsselsheim, Germany for the advancement of zero emission mobility in the heart of Europe. Committed to its vision for ‘Progress for Humanity’, Hyundai intends to take the next steps on its way to becoming a mobility solutions provider. With the construction of this new research building, HMETC will be able to support the company in the further development of future sustainable models, high-performance vehicles, and new mobility solutions.
Spread over the campus, the new facilities will be home to laboratories that will continue to drive Hyundai’s technologies forward, emphasising the importance of research and development in Europe. Hyundai will expand upon the testing and validation of SmartSense, the company’s Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). The company will also further develop its infotainment functions. On top of this, the new hub will also feature an electrification laboratory, dynamos, a workshop, a multi-purpose evaluation centre, a commercial vehicle office, and a showroom.
With the design phase to be finished by October of this year, the research building will boast an eco-friendly design and include creative spaces that promote collaboration and innovation.
By November 2024, the hub should be completed and ready to be moved into.
One step closer to carbon neutrality
Hyundai Motor Company remains committed to contributing to society’s sustainable future where people and communities are at its core. At IAA Mobility 2021, Hyundai Motor Company announced its ambitious goal of operating completely carbon neutral by 2045 – five years ahead of the target date the Paris Agreement set.
A major contribution will come from the expansion of the company’s zero-emission vehicle fleet. The new hub will strengthen Hyundai’s development of sustainable vehicles in Europe.
Beyond manufacturing cars, Hyundai is also looking into infrastructure and grid solutions to mobilise and power societies. By consulting the RE100 roadmap, the company will make its production and manufacturing process carbon neutral. For example, this year, the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech (HMMC) plant in Nošovice, Czech Republic became Hyundai’s first factory to run completely on renewable energy. The company will also collaborate with partners, affiliates, and suppliers to develop carbon-neutral guidelines and pursue carbon offsetting projects.
Hyundai’s initiatives – such as developing new air and ground mobility devices for urban areas and robotics – all serve a common purpose: to accelerate the transition towards clean and sustainable mobility.
