Hyundai Motor Company’s all-new NEXO, a standout model in its expanding electrified vehicle lineup, is poised to set a new standard for zero-emission transportation. This week, Hyundai Motor welcomed global media to Korea for an exclusive opportunity to experience its next-generation fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) firsthand – showcasing its exceptional range, power and refinement ahead of its global launch in early 2026.
Enhanced Powertrain Delivers Impressive Performance
The all-new NEXO marks a major leap forward in powertrain technology, featuring significant upgrades to both its fuel cell (FC) and power electronics (PE) systems.
At the heart of these improvements is a newly developed PE system that doubles battery output from 40 kW to 80 kW. This works in tandem with a more efficient hydrogen fuel cell stack, now delivering a maximum gross output of 110 kW – a 16% increase over the previous 95 kW – and a net system output of 94 kW, up 11% from 85 kW1. Together, these enhancements boost total system output from 135 kW to an impressive 190 kW.

This increased power enables the new electric motor to deliver 150 kW, cutting the 0-100 km/h acceleration time to just 7.8 seconds2 – down from 9.2 seconds – offering swift acceleration and confident overtaking performance.
With a projected driving range3 of 826 km4 (WLTP) from a quick five-minute hydrogen refill5, the all-new NEXO offers exceptional efficiency and usability. The hydrogen system now features greater storage capacity – 6.69 kg from 6.33 kg in the previous generation model – without compromising cabin space. Enhanced hydrogen storage density and improved fuel efficiency further reinforce the NEXO’s competitive edge in all-electric range (AER).
Additional refinements include improved low-temperature operability, a more durable membrane structure, and enhanced cell uniformity. The new ‘Wake Up’ anti-freezing function and other optimizations ensure reliable cold-weather performance and year-round driving confidence.
NEXO also includes a Smart Regenerative System (SRS) to reduce driver workload and to promote smoother progress. This intelligent system automatically adjusts regenerative braking based on navigation data and the proximity of vehicles ahead while utilizing map information6 to account for road features such as speed cameras and speed bumps. This reduces driver intervention by managing deceleration during coasting, all while offering customizable distance settings based on driver preferences.
In addition, European-specification models of the all-new NEXO introduce an exciting new capability: towing. With a towing capacity of up to 1,000 kg, NEXO becomes the first FCEV to offer this level of functionality, further expanding its versatility and appeal.7
Innovative Features Make Hydrogen Driving Intuitive and Convenient
The all-new NEXO is equipped with consumer-focused innovations designed to enhance convenience and simplify the FCEV driving experience. Its column-type shift lever frees up interior space, enabling increased storage capacity in the center console.
Like Hyundai Motor’s battery electric vehicles, NEXO incorporates a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, allowing users to power electronic devices both inside and outside the vehicle via its high-voltage battery. The exterior V2L capability offers direct plug-in functionality without the need for additional adapters, ensuring versatile power options.
For enhanced visibility, NEXO features a digital center mirror (DCM) and digital side mirror (DSM)8 systems in select markets, replacing traditional optical mirrors. These systems deliver a wider field of view, better blind spot detection, and improved visibility in low-light or adverse weather conditions.
The DCM includes a cleaning system to maintain rear camera clarity, while the DSM integrates with the blind view monitor (BVM) for improved lane-change visibility.
Additional advanced features include:
- A Dash Cam9 offers high-quality front and rear video recording with voice capture and parking motion detection for up to four days.
- In-vehicle fingerprint authentication10 simplifies operations by enabling biometric engine start, electronic payments and profile personalization.
- The Digital Key 2 system allows users to unlock and start the vehicle via wireless smartphone communication and supports up to 15 devices, including wearable technology such as Apple Watch. It also offers remote control functions and personalized profiles through an NFC Card Key.
- The Rear Occupant Alert System enhances safety by using radar sensors to detect movement in the rear seats and issuing audible and visual alerts to prevent occupants, such as children, from being left inside the vehicle.
Together, these advanced features make NEXO a user-centric, cutting-edge addition to Hyundai Motor’s electrified vehicle lineup.
Comprehensive Safety Systems Provide Protection and Peace of Mind
The all-new NEXO has been purposefully designed to achieve top safety ratings across major global safety assessment programs, showcasing Hyundai Motor’s dedication to delivering exceptional safety and protection for both drivers and passengers. Safety was a top priority throughout NEXO’s development, with its comprehensive safety features ensuring peace of mind on every journey.
The vehicle is built on a robust multi-skeleton structure and equipped with up to nine airbags11, offering extensive protection for passengers and the hydrogen tank. It also integrates the latest Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technologies, providing collision prevention solutions.
Built with hot stamping and high-strength materials, NEXO is engineered for enhanced body rigidity and exceptional passive safety. Designed to deliver superior collision performance across all body areas, it absorbs and disperses crash energy to minimize deformation of the passenger compartment.
Additionally, the use of third-generation ultra-high-strength steel improves formability compared to earlier generations. Structural enhancements include reinforced front-end components, a multi-piece hot-stamped lower side area, an optimized frontal crash load path, and a multi-load path structure to better manage side impacts, further elevating NEXO’s safety credentials.
These lamps embody Hyundai Motor Group’s HTWO hydrogen brand and its ‘Hydrogen for Humanity’ ethos, while the 4 Dot Lamps12 ensure unmistakable recognition as a Hyundai vehicle at night.
The all-new NEXO will be available in six striking colors: Creamy White Pearl, Phantom Black Pearl, Amazon Gray Metallic, Ocean Indigo Matte, Ecotronic Gray Pearl, and Goyo Copper Pearl – the last of which captures the spirit of ‘Koreanism’ through its deep, tranquil tone.
To enhance its visual impact, NEXO features a three-coat paint process, creating a multidimensional finish that shifts with light and environmental angles, giving the vehicle a uniquely dynamic presence.
Digital side mirror displays13 are integrated into the dashboard, enhancing openness and functionality while contributing to the ‘Furnished Space’ concept for a sophisticated and engaging experience.
Increased dimensions make NEXO longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, resulting in improved passenger comfort and increased cargo capacity. With a maximum rear storage volume of 993 liters14, the SUV provides enough space to accommodate up to four golf bags. Additionally, a new platform in the luggage area15 gives users the flexibility to customize the space with accessories tailored to their needs, enhancing practicality for a variety of lifestyles.
Comfort is further enhanced with first-row Premium Relaxation Seats16, which include leg rests and slim backs that improve knee clearance and legroom for second-row passengers. Additional enhancements, such as increased headroom and shoulder room, contribute to a more comfortable interior experience. The rear doors open wider17 than the previous generation car, too, making entry and exit easier.
Smart storage solutions throughout the cabin, including in the center console, dashboard and door trims, add to the vehicle’s practicality. Ambient mood lighting linked to speed limit alerts enhances the premium feel of the interior, while the vision roof creates an increased sense of space.
Sustainability is a core focus of the all-new NEXO, with eco-friendly materials18 used extensively throughout the cabin. These include bio-process leather, bio PU leather, recycled PET fabric, linen fabric, bio plastics, bio TPO skin, bio paint, bio PU slab foam and recycled automotive plastic waste, further underscoring Hyundai Motor’s commitment to environmentally conscious design.
