Hyundai is celebrating yet again as its phenomenal run of success in 2024 continued with two major wins at the Scottish Car of the Year Awards.

The awards, organised by the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers (ASMW), were handed out at a ceremony at Edinburgh’s Dalmahoy Hotel, and it proved to be a memorable evening for Hyundai, with IONIQ 5 N named Performance Car of the Year, and All-new SANTA FE taking the prize for Large ICE Car of the Year.

The ASMW awards are decided by Scotland’s most experienced motoring journalists and road testers, and after crowning the IONIQ 6 as Scottish Car of the Year in 2023, they had no hesitation in acclaiming two more Hyundais in 2024.

Hyundai is a company on the march, and two wins at SCOTY 2024 proves that beyond doubt, following the IONIQ 6’s overall victory last year. Our judges love the quality of Hyundai’s cars, the way they drive and the ease of their electrified drivetrains. Put simply, they are brilliant cars that demand any driver’s attention.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N has thrilled customers and media alike since its reveal in 2023. The high-performance model is based on the Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) of the standard IONIQ 5, and integrates the motorsport-bred technologies and expertise of Hyundai’s N division to take driving enjoyment to a new level.

Among a host of key technical advances is a powertrain which delivers greater power output and enhanced performance in battery cooling and braking. The IONIQ 5 N’s electric motors spin up to 21,000 RPM, providing up to 609 PS in normal conditions, or 650 PS when the car’s N Grin Boost (NGB) feature is engaged, maximising acceleration for up to 10 seconds. 0-62mph is achievable in 3.4 seconds, while a top speed of 161mph is attainable on tracks.

It also sets a new benchmark in terms of emotional engagement for a performance EV, courtesy of N e-shift, which simulates the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission of internal combustion engine N cars, while there’s an addictive soundtrack reminiscent of traditional emotive internal combustion engines courtesy of the groundbreaking N Active Sound+ technology.

The overall package is a thrilling blend of cutting-edge electric performance and old-school hot hatch charm that has picked up a string of prestigious honours, including 2024 World Performance Car in the World Car Awards. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N starts at £65,000.

Hot hatch doesn’t do justice to the IONIQ 5 N – our judges reckon it’s a rocket ship! Packed with technology which takes plug-in motoring to an entirely new level, the IONIQ 5 N is an extremely fast car, but one that carries people and luggage without compromise. Epic is an understatement.

The latest arrival to the Hyundai line-up, the All-new SANTA FE, picked up the Large ICE Car of the Year award thanks to its compelling blend of quality and practicality, plus an impressive powertrain which features the 1.6-litre T-GDi Smartstream engine in two Hybrid versions (with two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive), and also a four-wheel drive Plug-in Hybrid. The Hybrids deliver 215 PS and 367 Nm maximum torque, while the Plug-in Hybrid provides 253 PS and 367 Nm.

The package is enhanced by a striking design, with a distinctive boxy silhouette and customer-centric spacious interior, suited to a range of outdoor and urban activities. Fully foldable second- and third-row seats provide class-leading interior space, while the variety of high-tech, practical features adds to its signature nature-meets-city appeal. It also comes with a myriad of safety features, and a full suite of Hyundai Smart Sense Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.

Three trim levels – Premium, Ultimate and Calligraphy – are offered, while prices for the range start at £46,775, with Plug-in Hybrid models costing from £51,885.

Combining luxury limo levels of quality and space with a flexible interior configuration, a choice of conventional or plug-in drivetrains and an intelligent all-wheel-drive system, the Hyundai SANTA FE catapults itself into the heart of the premium SUV sector.

One of the most exciting aspects of the Hyundai product range at the moment is how competitive it is on all fronts, and we are pleased this has been recognised by the Association of Scottish Motor Writers in naming the IONIQ 5 N as Performance Car of the Year and the All-new SANTA FE as Large ICE Car of the Year. Awards such as these reinforce our commitment to offer buyers great choice across the market.
