The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N has been crowned Best Fun Car in the 2025 Parkers New Car Awards, continuing its phenomenal run of success. It marks the latest recognition for the IONIQ 5 N, which has become a dominant force among the performance EV market over the past year, picking up an array of high-profile accolades.
Now in their eighth year, the Parkers New Car Awards are chosen by the website’s expert reviewers, who praised the IONIQ 5 N for the undiluted pleasure that it delivers on every drive.
The IONIQ 5 N is the biggest leap forward we’ve yet seen in electric car technology – and it’s the only EV that our most devout petrolhead staffers have wanted to buy, because it does an exceptional impression of a petrol-powered hot hatchback. The best thing is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously – you get the impression that this is a car that has been designed by people who love driving.
The high-performance model is based on the Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) of the standard IONIQ 5, and integrates the motorsport-bred technologies and expertise of Hyundai’s N division to take driving enjoyment to a new level.
Among a host of key technical advances is a powertrain which delivers greater power output and enhanced performance in battery cooling and braking. The IONIQ 5 N’s electric motors spin up to 21,000 RPM, providing up to 609 PS in normal conditions, or 650 PS when the car’s N Grin Boost (NGB) feature is engaged, maximising acceleration for up to 10 seconds. 0-62mph is achievable in 3.4 seconds, while a top speed of 161mph is attainable on tracks.
Beyond blistering speed, the IONIQ 5 N also sets a new benchmark in terms of emotional engagement for a performance EV, courtesy of N e-shift, which simulates the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission of internal combustion engine N cars, while there’s an addictive soundtrack reminiscent of traditional emotive internal combustion engines courtesy of the car’s groundbreaking N Active Sound+ technology. The overall package is a thrilling blend of cutting-edge electric performance and old-school hot hatch charm.
The recognition from Parkers follows a series of prestigious honours over the past 12 months for the IONIQ 5 N, including being crowned 2024 World Performance Car in the World Car Awards. In December it was chosen as TopGear.com’s overall 2023 Car of the Year, following that up in May by being named Best EV Hot Hatch in the TopGear.com Electric Awards. In the same month, CAR hailed it as the world’s best electric performance car following a definitive seven-car test, while both Autocar and Auto Express named it Best Performance Car of 2024, and it was also The Sunday Times’ Hot Hatch of the Year.
The intent with the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N was clear from the outset – to deliver an exceptional electric performance car that was thrilling to drive, but also usable on a daily basis. As the months have passed since it first went on sale, it has been very gratifying to see it pick up a string of awards from industry experts who have been genuinely wowed by its capabilities. We are particularly pleased to add Best Fun Car from Parkers to the roll of honour, as driving fun is the essence of the IONIQ 5 N experience.
