Advanced safety & driving assistance features

Hyundai truly cares about the customer’s well-being. To comply with the highest European safety standards, the fourth generation SANTA FE offers one of the best-in-class safety packages and industry-first safety features. All features are part of the Hyundai SmartSense active safety and driving assistance technologies.

For the first time, the new SANTA FE has been equipped with Highway Driving Assist (HDA). The feature is a combination of Lane Following Assist (LFA) and Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control Curve (NSCC-C), utilising sensors and map data to ensure safe operation as well as to automatically adjust speed even in curves. A special button on the steering wheel allows the driver to activate HDA with just one click.

Another new feature, Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA) uses a rear view camera and rear ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles when reversing, providing a warning and applying the brakes, if necessary, to avoid a collision. Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) enables the driver to move the new SANTA FE forward or backward by using the key, without being in the car. Other features include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), Safe Exit Assist (SEA), Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), Lane Following Assist (LFA) and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA).

Available Hyundai SmartSense active safety and driving assistance features:

[New] Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) with Junction Turning: this autonomous braking function can detect cars, pedestrians and cyclists. FCA now includes Junction Turning, which expands the range of protection to include collisions at intersections while turning left.

[New] Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control Curve (NSCC-C): this system automatically adjusts the speed to match local speed limits and upcoming curvers, using the SANTE FE’s GPS data.

[New] Lane Following Assist (LFA): using a camera to monitor lane marks, LFA keeps the vehicle safely centered within the lane by applying corrective steering input.

[New] Highway Driving Assist (HDA) 1.5: as a combination of NSCC-C and LFA, HAD maintains the pre-set speed while keeping a safe distance to other vehicles in front, as well as the current lane of travel on the highway.

[New] Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA): aids drivers when parking and pulling out by autonomously moving forward and reversing the vehicle, even if outside of the car. The feature can be activated and controlled via the Smart Key.

[New] Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA): uses a rear view camera and rear ultrasonic sensors to detect pedestrians or obstacles when reversing at low speeds, providing a warning and applying the brakes, if necessary, to avoid a collision.

Rear Cross-traffic Collision Assist (RCCA): applies the brakes in case of the risk of a rear collision from crossing vehicles while reversing.

Blind-spot View Monitor (BVM): offers an enhancement of the views on the side mirror by showing the rear view in the cluster when the turn signal is activated.

Blind-spot Collision Warning (BCW): monitors the rear corners and, if another vehicle is detected, a visual alert appears on the exterior mirrors. If the driver then activates the indicators, an audible signal is emitted.

Blind-spot Collision-avoidance Assist (BCA): uses rear radars to monitor rear corners and, if another vehicle is detected, a visual alert appears on the exterior mirrors. Where necessary, BCA emits an audible warning and applies differential braking.

Safe Exit Assist (SEA): alerts occupants if there is oncoming traffic when they attempt to step out of the car and keeps the door locked to ensure safety.

Rear Occupant Alert (ROA): monitors the rear seats via a sensor that detects the movements. Visual and auditory warnings are then relayed to the driver to ensure they remove passengers from the rear seats before leaving and locking the vehicle.

Surround View Monitor (SVM): provides a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and the surrounding area and offers a variety of selectable perspectives.

The new SANTA FE is designed to protect its passengers. Next to six airbags (two front, two side and two curtain airbags) significant improvements in collision safety have been achieved thanks to the all-new Hyundai vehicle platform. It enables the car to better absorb the impact in the event of a collision while at the same time minimising the deformation of the passenger space.

Ride and handling enhancements for more comfort

The new SANTA FE features an advanced four-wheel drive system with an enhanced torque application depending on wheel grip and the speed of vehicle, called HTRAC. HTRAC is a combination of the words “Hyundai” and “traction,” and the technology is intended to enable agile handling and better torque application depending on wheel grip and vehicle speed. Hyundai’s next generation four-wheel drive technology controls the torque distribution and braking power of the front and rear wheels variably. It supports drivers in all kinds of driving situations, whether on snow, slippery roads or in regular road conditions, and enhances stability in cornering.

Terrain Mode Selector

For the first time, the new SANTA FE versions with four-wheel drive come with a Terrain Mode selector: a control knob located in the centre console to conveniently switch between different drive modes. The different drive modes optimise driving performance and HTRAC settings for a variety of situations. This feature includes unique driving modes for sand, snow and mud, as well as the driving modes eco, sport and comfort. An additional option, smart driving mode, means the car will automatically recognise the driving style and select a mode so the driver does not have to.

The combination of the different drive modes with HTRAC results in improvements in acceleration, stability and fuel efficiency. On surfaces such as snow, gravel and mud, the system increases traction for enhanced cornering performance. In slippery conditions, power is automatically distributed to all four wheels. In sport mode, HTRAC enables improved acceleration by distributing up to 50 percent torque distributed to the rear wheels. In comfort mode, it improves stability by distributing up to 35 percent torque to the rear wheels. In eco mode, the system improves fuel efficiency by only using front-wheel drive.

New platform for improved performance

The new SANTA FE is the first Hyundai model in Europe and first Hyundai SUV globally based on the all-new third-generation Hyundai vehicle platform. The new platform allows for significant improvements in performance, handling, fuel efficiency and safety.

By applying a multiple inlet air-curtain, the flow field around the wheels is improved. In addition, due to the efficient undercover configuration in the new platform, the aerodynamic force underneath the vehicle has been significantly decreased. Vehicle stability is enhanced by the lowered position of heavy equipment within the platform, which reduces weight and lowers the centre of gravity. Aerodynamics have also been improved so that air resistance is minimised to deliver excellent fuel efficiency, power and driving performance.

The fixed points for the steering arms have been positioned closer to the middle of the front wheels, allowing for more agile handling. Meanwhile, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance is improved through reinforced sound-absorbing systems in vibration-sensitive parts.

The new platform also brings with it significant improvements in collision safety, thanks to improvements in engineering. Through the use of a multi-load path structure, hot stamping, and the integration of a super high-tensile steel plate, the platform will enable the car to better absorb the impact in the event of a collision while at the same time minimising the deformation of the passenger space.

New powertrain options for both sporty and eco-conscious consumers

The new SANTA FE is the first Hyundai in Europe on sale with the new ‘Smartstream’ hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The hybrid version of the new SANTA FE consists of the new 1.6-litre T-GDi (turbocharged gasoline direct injection) ‘Smartstream’ engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor, connected to a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. It is available with two-wheel (fuel consumption combined (WLTP): 6.9 – 6.4 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined (WLTP): 157 - 146 g/km) or four-wheel drive (fuel consumption combined (WLTP): 7.6 – 6.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined (WLTP): 172 - 157 g/km). The system has a combined output of 230 PS power with a maximum speed of 187 km/h and a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 8.9 seconds (9.1 with 4WD).

The plug-in hybrid version comes with the same 1.6-litre T-GDi ‘Smartstream’ engine paired with a 66.9 kW electric motor drawing its power from a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. This variant will be available with four-wheel drive. The powerful 265 PS SUV can travel purely electric for up to 58 km (WLTP) on a single charge. In city driving conditions, the SANTA FE Plug-in Hybrid can even drive up to 69 km (WLTP) before the gasoline engine needs to support. In normal use, with both the electric motor and internal combustion engine running, the SANTA FE Plug-in Hybrid emits just 37 g/km of CO2 and consumes 1.6 l/100 km (WLTP, weighted combined), making it one of the most efficient cars in its segment. The SANTA FE Plug-in Hybrid accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 187 km/h.

Both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains are available with a newly-developed 6-speed automatic transmission (6AT). Compared to its predecessor, the 6AT brings improved transmission and fuel efficiency.

The new 1.6-litre T-GDi ‘Smartstream’ engine is also the first engine to utilise Hyundai’s Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) technology and also features Low-Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (LP EGR) to further optimise fuel efficiency. The CVVD regulates the duration of valve opening and closing according to driving conditions, achieving a boost in performance and improvements in fuel efficiency and emissions.

The LP EGR returns some of the gas burnt by the engine to the combustion chamber, producing a cooling effect and reducing the emission of nitrogen oxides. The 1.6 T-GDi also features a low-pressure system that redirects the burnt emission gas to the front of the turbocharger compressor, rather than the intake system, to increase efficiency under high load conditions.

New diesel engine with 8-speed wet DCT

As an alternative, customers will be able to choose the new 2.2-litre ‘Smartstream’ diesel powertrain, which has been updated to achieve improvements in fuel efficiency and performance.

Compared to the previous engine generation, the new engine block consists of aluminium instead of iron, leading to a weight reduction of 36.7 kg. Different parts of the engine have been improved, including, for example, the camshaft, to reduce internal friction and improve overall fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the engine has been equipped with a new 2,200 bar injection system (compared to a 2,000 bar injection system on the previous engine), improving overall engine performance. The four-cylinder engine produces 202 PS and 440 Nm torque and is available with two-wheel (fuel consumption combined (WLTP): 6.3 – 6.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined (WLTP): 166 - 161 g/km) or four-wheel drive (fuel consumption combined (WLTP): 6.9 – 6.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined (WLTP): 181 - 176 g/km). When paired with the 2.2-litre diesel engine, the SANTA FE has a maximum speed of 205 km/h and a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 9.0 seconds (9.2 with 4WD).

The new engine is combined with a newly developed 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (8DCT), offering the smooth shifting characteristics of a conventional automatic transmission while enhancing efficiency over dry dual clutch transmissions. Compared to a 7-speed double-clutch transmission, maximum torque capacity is increased by 58% thanks to an optimum clutch cooling performance, achieved through a dedicated electric oil pump for lubrication. The high efficiency hydraulic control system consists of an on-demand control-based electric oil pump and accumulator. Fuel efficiency is improved by 3% through reduced engine power loss and increased hydraulic efficiency, in comparison to 8-speed automatic transmission models. The new 8DCT also creates a more dynamic driving experience and enhances acceleration performance by up to 9%, compared to 6-speed manual transmission models4.

The specified fuel consumption and emission data have been determined according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).

2 ‘weighted combined’ emissions are a weighted average of the fuel consumption or CO2 emissions in ‘charge-depleting’ (for SANTA FE Plug-in Hybrid: 0.473 l/100km; 10.70 g/km) and ‘charge-sustaining’ (for SANTA FE Plug-in Hybrid: 7.571 l/100km; 172 g/km) driving conditions.

3 The availability of Bluelink® and individual features may vary by market.

Final values might differ depending on the model and specification that the technology is applied to.
