Andreas-Christoph Hofmann Vice President Marketing & Product at Hyundai Motor Europe (2022)

Rebirth of IONIQ

Hyundai first introduced the term IONIQ, which fuses ‘ion’ and ‘unique’, when it announced Project IONIQ in 2016, a long-term research and development project focused on eco-friendly mobility. Based on the project, Hyundai introduced a vehicle named IONIQ later that year. This was the world’s first and only model to offer a choice of three electrified powertrain options – hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric – within a single body type. Now, the name IONIQ represents Hyundai’s growing commitment to sustainability and innovation and will be instrumental in achieving the company’s clean mobility goals.

The IONIQ line-up brand was conceived to fuse life-changing mobility with environmental performance and has so far been a key factor in Hyundai in delivering electrified progress. IONIQ will continue to create a new balance in clean mobility synchronising eco-products within an eco-system of lifestyle solutions, bringing connected living to a new generation.

IONIQ 5 / IONIQ 6 / IONIQ 7

Hyundai is launching numerically named EVs under the new line-up brand, with the even numbers used for sedans and the odd numbers for SUVs.

IONIQ 5, a fully-electric midsize CUV, became the first model to be introduced under the IONIQ line-up brand in 2021. It is based on the concept EV ‘45’, which Hyundai unveiled at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2019 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany as a homage to its very first concept car.

The latest IONIQ model, IONIQ 6, is an Electrified Streamliner based on Hyundai’s concept EV ‘Prophecy’. It offers a bridge to the future of electric mobility that is both environmentally conscious and human-centric.

In 2024, Hyundai will introduce IONIQ 7, an all-electric large SUV based on its SEVEN concept.

Underlining Hyundai’s commitment to zero emission mobility

The launch of the IONIQ line-up brand dedicated to EV models reinforces the company’s commitment to clean mobility and reflects its ongoing transformation to a Smart Mobility Solutions Provider with zero-emission solutions.

Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP architecture

IONIQ 6 is the second Hyundai model based on Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). E-GMP serves as the core technology for the company’s next-generation BEV line-up.

Designed exclusively for BEVs, E-GMP provides various advantages compared to platforms developed to accommodate internal combustion engines. As demonstrated by IONIQ 6, its benefits include increased development flexibility, powerful driving performance, increased driving range, strengthened safety features, and more interior space for occupants and luggage.

E-GMP is the culmination of years of research and development and brings together our most cutting-edge technologies. Our BEV line-up will evolve and be strengthened by this innovative new platform.

Fayez Abdul Rahman Senior Vice President of Vehicle Architecture Development Center for Hyundai Motor Group (2022)

Modularisation and standardisation ensure highest development flexibility

E-GMP reduces complexity through modularisation and standardisation, allowing rapid and flexible development of products, which can be used across most vehicle segments, including sedans, SUVs, and CUVs. Moreover, flexible development can satisfy various customer needs for vehicle performance.

In the coming years, E-GMP will be highly effective in expanding the Group’s EV leadership position as it will enable the company to enlarge its BEV line-up over a relatively short period through modularisation and standardisation.

Designed for driving performance, safety, and maximised space

E-GMP is engineered to offer improved cornering performance and driving stability at high speed. This is due to optimal weight distribution between the front and rear, a design that enables a low centre of gravity thanks to its low-mounted battery pack, and the adoption of electric motors located in the space previously occupied by an engine.

The high-speed electric motor raises the driving performance of E-GMP vehicles like IONIQ 6. A five-link rear suspension system, which is typically used for mid- and large-sized vehicle segments, and the world’s first mass-produced integrated drive axle (IDA), which combines wheel bearings with the drive shaft to transmit power to the wheels, enhance ride comfort and handling stability.

The platform secures battery safety through a battery support structure made of ultra-high-strength steel. Hot-stamped steel components surround this structure for additional rigidity. Collision energy can be absorbed efficiently thanks to energy-absorbent sections of the body and chassis, effective energy load paths, and a central section of the battery pack tightly bound to the vehicle body.

Moreover, by strengthening the structure of the load support section, located in front of the dashboard, engineers have been able to minimise collision energy to the power electric system and battery. The A-pillar’s load distribution structure also prevents the deformation of the passenger cell.

IONIQ 6 exhibits how E-GMP maximises interior space through its long 2,950-mm wheelbase. With the battery pack mounted beneath the floor, E-GMP creates a flat floor for the cabin. This provides more legroom for passengers while enabling various arrangements for the front and rear seats.

The battery pack itself – mounted between the front and rear axles – is the most power-dense system that Hyundai Motor Group has ever created. This is partly thanks to its enhanced cooling performance, a result of a new separate cooling block structure which helps make it more compact. With energy density enhanced by around ten per cent compared to existing EV battery technology, the battery packs in models such as IONIQ 6 are lighter, can be mounted lower in the body, and liberate more cabin space.

Multi- (800V and 400V) and bi-directional charging system

Most existing EVs and the fast-charging infrastructure provide 50 ~ 150 kW charging for EVs equipped with a 400-volt system; however, the development of 800-volt infrastructure, with up to 350 kW charging, will gradually enable even more fast charging.

E-GMP offers ultra-high-speed 800-volt charging capability as standard and is also capable of mainstream 400-volt fast charging without the need for additional components or adapters. In fact, the patented multi-charging system that features in IONIQ 6 became a world-first technology when it debuted in IONIQ 5. Using the vehicle’s inverter, a 400-volt charge is converted into 800-volt so that it can be stored in the battery.

IONIQ 6 is capable of achieving an all-electric range of up to 614 km (WLTP combined) with a fully charged battery, thanks to E-GMP. Moreover, with a high-speed 350-kW charger, it can charge up to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes or achieve 351 kilometres of range in just 15 minutes.

Unlike previous BEVs, which were only capable of one-way charging, E-GMP’s charging system is more flexible. E-GMP’s newly developed Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) represents an upgrade from existing onboard chargers, which typically only allow electricity to flow in a single direction from an external power source.

The ICCU enables the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. V2L can discharge energy from the vehicle battery without additional components. This enables BEVs based on the E-GMP to operate other electric machinery (110-volt/220-volt) anywhere. The V2L function of IONIQ 6 can supply up to 3.6 kW of power, which is enough to operate a mid-sized air conditioner unit and a 55-inch television for up to 24 hours.

IONIQ 6 exterior design: EV meets Electrified Streamliner

Inspired by Hyundai’s Prophecy EV Concept, IONIQ 6 is characterised by clean, simple lines, and a pure aerodynamic form that Hyundai designers describe as ‘Emotional Efficiency’. Like the award-winning IONIQ 5 before it, IONIQ 6 implements the Hyundai Look design strategy that gives each model a unique appearance, like pieces of a chessboard. By taking a customer-centric direction, Hyundai designs its models with diverse lifestyles in mind rather than via a one-style-fits-all approach.

IONIQ 6’s Electrified Streamliner typology and mindful cocoon-like interior embody a silhouette for the new era of electric mobility, simultaneously satisfying customers’ aesthetic and functional needs. The model’s aerodynamically sculpted silhouette with simple yet sensuous curves offers a new typology for the EV mobility era.

IONIQ 6 connects an emotional convergence of functionality with aesthetics. The distinctive streamlined design is the result of close cooperation between engineers and designers, with obsessive attention to detail and customer-centric values at the core. We have created IONIQ 6 as a mindful cocoon that offers a personalised place for everyone.

SangYup Lee Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center (2022)

Hyundai maximised IONIQ 6’s all-electric driving range through extensive aerodynamic design and engineering work. The vehicle’s ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.21 is the lowest in the company’s line-up and one of the lowest in the industry.

The rear wing’s Parametric Pixel High-Mounted Stop Lamp (HMSL) delivers an eye-catching light execution when the brakes are applied. To further highlight IONIQ 6’s uniqueness, the newly designed flat-type Hyundai ‘H’ badge is applied on the front and rear of the vehicle.

With an impressive overall length of 4,855 mm, IONIQ 6’s 1,880-mm width and 1,495-mm height – supported by a choice of 20-inch or 18-inch wheels – give it a distinctively sleek and stylish appearance.

Streamliner design for perfected aerodynamics

IONIQ 6’s streamlined appearance and various design elements, such as two active air flaps at the front, wheel air curtains, integrated rear spoiler, and wheel gap reducers, significantly enhanced the model’s aerodynamics performance, placing it among the sleekest vehicles worldwide. In particular, wheel gap reducers minimise the empty space between the front bumper and tyres to improve aerodynamic performance around the wheel wells. Applied for the first time in a Hyundai model, this makes it possible for the company’s Electrified Streamliner to enhance passengers’ riding comfort while simultaneously overcoming the aerodynamic challenges caused by its short front overhang.

Further aiding IONIQ 6’s enviable aerodynamic aptitude is its elliptical wing-inspired spoiler with winglet, slight boat-tail structure, and separation traps on both sides of the rear bumper. Even underneath the car, the endeavour to achieve better aerodynamics is evident in the full cover of the undercarriage, optimised deflectors and reduced wheel-arch gap.

IONIQ 6 is also equipped with Digital Side Mirrors (DSM). These replace traditional door mirrors with cameras and OLED monitors for better visibility and improved safety.

Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) helps to maintain a set distance and speed from the vehicle ahead when driving on a highway and helps to centre the vehicle in the lane while driving, even though a curve. In case the vehicle on the side is driving very close, it assists to adjust the vehicle’s path to avoid danger. When driving above a certain speed, the driver can hold the steering wheel and use the turn signal switch. The car will automatically change lanes in the indicated direction.

Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) helps to maintain distance from the vehicle ahead and drive at a speed set by the driver by reflecting the learned driving style of the driver. When SCC is inactive, the function learns the driver's driving style. When SCC is activated, the function stops learning and drives automatically by mimicking the learned driving style.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) helps to avoid collisions with objects in front of the vehicle while driving. If a preceding vehicle suddenly slows, or if a forward-collision risk is detected, such as a stopped vehicle, a cyclist, or a pedestrian, it provides a warning. After the warning, if the risk of collision remains, it will assist with emergency braking. While driving, if there is a risk of collision with a cyclist ahead, or with an oncoming vehicle while turning at an intersection, it will help assist with emergency braking.

IONIQ 6’s FCA 2 (available from mid trim and above) is equipped with enhanced functions of Junction Turning, Junction Crossing, Lane-Changing Oncoming, and Lane-Changing Side along with Evasive Steering Assist. While driving through an intersection if there is a risk of collision with oncoming vehicles from the left or right, it automatically assists with emergency braking. When changing lanes while driving, if there is a risk of collision with an oncoming vehicle in the next lane or a preceding vehicle in the next lane, it automatically assists with avoidance steering if there is no risk of a secondary collision. And while driving, if there is a risk of collision with a pedestrian, partially in the vehicle’s intended path, it automatically assists with avoidance steering if there is enough space in the current lane.

Other semi-autonomous driving features include Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), which adjusts vehicle speed to match the speed limit, and the automatic function of Intelligent Front-lighting System (IFS), which partially turns off the high beam lights that disrupt other drivers when a car is detected in front or on the opposite side of the road.

IONIQ 6 has several driver attention-related functions. Driver Attention Warning (DAW) analyses the driver’s attention while driving and warns when necessary. It provides a warning when signs of driver inattentiveness are detected and recommends a rest if needed. During a stop, the driver is alerted if the leading vehicle departs.

Several functions work in tandem to help avoid collisions in a variety of driving situations. Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) helps avoid collisions at the rear side of the vehicle when changing lanes. When operating the turn signal to change lanes, if there is a risk of collision detected with a rear-side vehicle, it will provide a warning. If exiting a parallel parking spot and there is a risk of collision detected with a rear-side vehicle, it will assist with emergency braking.

Another function, Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), displays a video of the blind-spot view for a safe lane change. When operating the turn signal switch, it displays a video of the blind-spot view for the direction indicated.

IONIQ 6 also assures the safety of backseat passengers with Safe Exit Warning (SEW), which provides a warning when a vehicle is approaching from the rear side while getting out of the vehicle. When the occupant opens the door to exit the vehicle after a stop, if an approaching vehicle from the rear side is detected, it provides a warning.

A variety of features make parking in a variety of circumstances easier than before. Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2) offers remote parking and helps drivers remotely exit a parking spot from outside the vehicle. This feature works for parallel, perpendicular, and even diagonal parking.

Surround View Monitor (SVM) displays video of the situation around the vehicle for safe parking. Forward/Side/Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA) helps avoid collisions with pedestrians and objects around the vehicle while parking or exiting. If there is a risk of collision with pedestrians or objects while parking and exiting, it provides a warning. After the warning, if the risk of collision increases, it automatically assists with emergency braking.

Similarly, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) helps avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles on the left or right side of the vehicle while reversing. If there is a risk of collision with an oncoming vehicle on the left or right side while reversing, it provides a warning. After the warning, if the risk of collision increases, it automatically assists with emergency braking.

Ride & handling: sleekest silhouette for the smoothest driving

Hyundai Motor maximised IONIQ 6’s all-electric driving range through extensive aerodynamic design and engineering work. The vehicle’s drag coefficient of 0.21 is the lowest in the company’s vehicle line-up and one of the lowest in the industry.

The model’s streamlined appearance and various design elements, such as an active air flap, wheel air curtains, integrated rear spoiler, and wheel gap reducers, significantly enhanced IONIQ 6’s aerodynamics performance, placing it among the sleekest vehicles worldwide. In particular, wheel gap reducers minimise the empty space between the front bumper and tyres to improve aerodynamic performance around the wheel wells. This Hyundai invention made it possible to provide a longer wheelbase for passengers’ riding comfort while simultaneously overcoming the aerodynamic challenges caused by its short front overhang.

Further accentuating IONIQ 6’s driving dynamics characteristics is a state-of-the-art damper setup that combines a sporty drive with a high level of comfort.

The new technology integrates the usual damper and suspension components but also adds another feature to adjust the amount of pressure on the rebound disc stack in the damper. The rebound damping force can now be amended dynamically based on the input frequency provided by the unevenness of the road.

This innovation delivers a solid and sporty ride at lower frequency inputs and a smooth and comfortable drive at higher frequencies. The technology particularly comes into action when riding on dynamic winding roads and, at the other end of the driving spectrum, when driving on uneven surfaces, such as cobblestones.
