Hyundai Motor recently unveiled its IONIQ 6 Electrified Streamliner. This model is the second of the company’s IONIQ EV line-up brand, following the launch of IONIQ 5 last year.

The international motoring and tech media have delivered their verdict on IONIQ 6, expressing excitement about its exterior and interior design, spaciousness and all-electric range, in particular.

Built on Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), IONIQ 6 is equipped with an array of advanced technologies and a customer-centric, spacious interior. In addition, it provides an extended range of over 610 kilometres on a single charge (WLTP-estimated), redefining the boundaries of electric mobility.

Here is what media have said about IONIQ 6 so far:

The UK’s Top Gear had warm words for IONIQ 6’s design, praising Hyundai for its boldness and the company’s fearlessness to push boundaries.

IONIQ 6’s willingness to explore an era that predates the company’s existence is mischievous and suggests considerable self-belief. In the midst of a vast product range, it seems that electrification is giving the company permission to do something we should all aim for as often as possible: have fun.

Also from the UK, Autocar described IONIQ 6 as “a rakish, aero optimised saloon”, emphasising the practicality of its exterior design.

The influence of the [Hyundai’s concept EV] Prophecy is clear in the pixel style light clusters, subtle ducktail rear spoiler and curved shoulder line, but IONIQ 6 is a taller and thus more practical proposition, with a roofline roughly 200mm higher off the ground than that of the show car, chiefly because of the 150mm thick battery pack.

German newspaper Handelsblatt praised Hyundai’s chess-piece design direction, which ensures that IONIQ 6 offers a distinct alternative offering compared to its IONIQ 5 sibling.

The almost consistent renunciation of references to IONIQ 5 is astonishing. IONIQ 6 is clearly not a saloon version of the [fully-electric midsize CUV] IONIQ 5, but a statement in its own right.

Italy’s Alvolante.it was impressed with IONIQ 6’s “seductive proportions”, noting its striking 0.21 drag coefficient, the lowest-ever in a Hyundai model. The publication also highlighted the marriage between design and technological innovation in IONIQ 6:

Hyundai's new electric saloon is a blend of original and innovative solutions, where technology and design come together to stand out.

“The Hyundai IONIQ 6 boasts beautiful aerodynamic curves and a high-performance drag coefficient of 0.21,” says Caradisiac. In addition to its praise of the model’s exterior, the French automotive publication also highlights IONIQ 6’s roominess inside:

There is plenty of room on board… there's no shortage of space in the front and rear seats, and the floor offers a flat surface.

Spain’s El Pais, reflected that IONIQ 6 “emanates a futuristic and highly technological style”. Commenting on its interior space, the publication believes Hyundai has taken a bold step forward to deliver on its Progress for Humanity vision.

The interior of IONIQ 6 breaks new ground for Hyundai, representing its forward-looking vision for the progress of humanity and its interaction with vehicles ... Sitting behind the steering wheel, flattened underneath, are two joined 12-inch digital displays in the most current and futuristic style of the automotive industry.

German media outlet, Welt.de, noted the model’s ample spaciousness and was impressed that this was achieved while also maintaining a curved exterior.

IONIQ 6 offers generous room for manoeuvre in both the front and the rear. Despite the sloping roof towards the rear, it offers plenty of legroom as well as good headroom.

Leading tech media also had their say about Hyundai’s Electrified Streamliner. The Verge suggests IONIQ 6 can be a “home away from home office”, by offering a “sleek” personal mobile studio. This includes features such as Relaxation Comfort Seats and Dual Colour Ambient Lighting, which enable occupants to relax and revitalise while on the road.

IONIQ 6 is “astonishing aerodynamic”, according to WIRED. The tech bible praises IONIQ 6 for its large size, despite initially appearing to a much slighter vehicle.

IONIQ 6 also pulls off the same visual illusion as [IONIQ 5] in seeming much smaller than it really is. Only when you approach the car do the EV’s full dimensions reveal themselves … This is without question a big car, but it just doesn’t look it.

WIRED

Meanwhile, Tech Radar complimented IONIQ 6 for its “Tesla-challenging range’ of over 610 km of range on a single charge (WLTP-estimated), describing it as one of the models “standout” features, alongside a “whole host of tech”.

Positive reactions from influencers and YouTubers

As well as being heralded by traditional written automotive media, IONIQ 6 has also received a number of positive reviews from influencers and video reviewers with a strong presence on YouTube.

Marques Brownlee, who runs the popular MKBHD YouTube channel which has over 15 million subscribers, had some warm words for IONIQ 6’s design on a recent episode of his Waveform podcast. Describing the car as “very sleek” with particular praise for the “unique” headlights, Brownlee concluded that the model is “one of the best deals for an EV”.

Christopher Karatsonyi, who runs the German YouTube channel Car Maniac, described IONIQ 6 as looking “really adventurous” and “exciting”. In his review, he drew attention to how the model’s design reflects Hyundai’s customer-centric approach:

Matrix LED Headlights are something many customers wanted, and are getting with IONIQ 6.

Meanwhile, Mat Watson of UK YouTube Channel carwow was effusive in his praise of the second model of Hyundai’s IONIQ line-up brand, comparing its eye-catching design very favourably compared to its market competition.

[IONIQ 6] is one of the coolest electric cars you’ll ever see ... it has made all other electric saloon cars look dull.

Finally, Jonny Smith who presents The Late Brake Show on YouTube, describes IONIQ 6 as “quite ‘out there’, in a good way”. In his review, he was particularly complimentary about the interior, noting it offers “a deceivingly large amount of room”. Smith also praises Hyundai for developing EVs that are “recognisable, memorable [and] strong”, and praises the company’s designers for “writing their own rulebook”.
