Introduction: the Hyundai ix20
It boasts a range of efficient and flexible powertrains, generous levels of intuitive technologies, and the Hyundai’s characteristic dynamic design. Class-leading interior space is bolstered by practical features, flexible seating and easy access for loading bulkier items. A raft of convenient features and user-friendly controls make the cabin a welcoming environment for driver and passengers.
A powerful and efficient 1.6-litre MPi petrol engine is now standard across the range and can be specified with either a manual or automatic six-speed transmission. The engine is fully compliant with the latest Euro 6d Temp emissions standard.
The ix20’s dynamic design includes Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture cues, incorporating smooth curves and stylish character lines that result in a purposeful and appealing stance.
Since its initial launch in 2010, Hyundai has sold almostover 30,000 (30,376) units of ix20 in the UK – capturing a 5 5.4% share (2018 ytd) of the country’s mini multi-purpose vehicle (mini MPV) market. Production of the ix20 is based at Hyundai’s European plant in Nošovice, Czech Republic.
Dynamic design outside and inside
The ix20 displays Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design, which manifests in smooth curves and flowing lines. It delivers MPV practicality without conventional MPV styling, packaged within a dynamic body with a raft of versatility-boosting features.
At the front, the ix20’s design stands out with a bold hexagonal front grille, finished with chrome bar accents. The crisp silhouette features subtle curved lines that run through the wraparound headlights and underline the hexagonal front grille to create a sense of forward motion.
Prominent upper and lower character lines – the former bisecting the chrome-coated door handleinserts – add depth to the ix20’s flanks. The stylish exterior is also aerodynamically efficient, including ‘upswept’ sculpted door mirrors that help to reduce drag.
To further enhance its dynamic exterior, a rear spoiler extends from the top of the tailgate, featuring an integrated high-level brake light. Lower down, neatly-situated rear fog lights form part of the rear bumper, helping to increase safety in adverse weather conditions. As standard, the ix20 is fitted with striking diamond-cut 16-inch alloy wheels.
Buyers can choose from eight exterior colours. Two solid colours are now offered, with Engine Red new for 2019 alongside the existing Polar White – both of which are no-cost options. Metallic hues of Micron Grey and Fiery Red remain, joined by Olivine Grey and Stellar Blue. Two pearl colours – Platinum Silver and Phantom Black – are also available.
Inside, the ix20 brings outstanding versatility to its class, with a spacious cabin and high-capacity load area. Within its overall length of 4,120 mm, the ix20 has an unusually long wheelbase for its class (at 2,615 mm). The roofline sits at 1,600 mm, delivering a highly practical interior, closer in size to larger C-segment vehicles than its segment competitors.
Beyond the impressive and class-leading 440-litre boot (with rear seats up), more extensive versatility comes from the 60:40-split sliding ‘dive and fold’ rear seats, which, when folded allow up to 1,486 litres of loading capacity. The storage area can be adjusted with the two-step flexible floor, which can be split to accommodate more items above or below the luggage floor as needed. A hidden luggage ‘under tray’ keeps valuable belongings safely stored beneath the flat load surface. Bag hooks and a luggage net feature in the boot of all models, to further improve ease-of-use.
Modern and stylish interior
The quality and style of the ix20’s interior is reflected in the soft-touch feel of the dashboard and an ergonomically-positioned, intuitive centre console. It has been created through the combination of unique, three-dimensional design elements and high-grade material finishes.
Cooling blue illumination of the instrument panel helps to soothe the driver’s eyes on night-time journeys, while the leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob add a premium feel to the controls.
Black cloth upholstery is standard across the range, and the mood in the cabin can be enhanced by the tilt-and-slide dual-panel panoramic glass sunroof (on Premium Nav models).
Efficient and flexible powertrains
The Hyundai ix20 is equipped with a powerful and efficient petrol engine, with a choice of manual or automatic transmission.
The 1.6-litre, four-cylinder MPi powertrain is paired with either six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine (manual variant) can return an average of 43.5 mpg and its official CO2 emissions start from 149g/km.
Maximum power is 125 PS at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 156 Nm is available at 4,200 rpm. Acceleration from standstill to 62mph takes 10.8 seconds with the six-speed manual gearbox or 11.5 seconds for the automatic model. Top speeds are 115 mph or 112 mph, for the manual and automatic transmissions respectively.
The six-speed manual transmission also includes an eco-drive indicator, which suggests the optimum time to change gear for maximum efficiency.
Packed with intuitive technologies and safety features
The ix20’s practical cabin features a generous level of equipment as standard. Every model features handsfree Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, a six-speaker CD audio system USB and AUX connections, and rear parking sensors.
Higher-specification models introduce features such as touch-screen satellite navigation and a panoramic sunroof.
Convenient features at your fingertips
The range of features fitted as standard in the ix20 are all simple to use and make life easier for the driver. Electrically-adjustable and heated door mirrors provide a clear view of the road behind; MP3 compatibility with cable inputs make it easy to listen to your favourite tracks across multiple devices; the touch-screen navigation includes a Traffic Messaging Channel; and reversing sensors combined with a rear-facing parking camera (on SE Nav and Premium Nav models) provide extra assistance when manoeuvring into the tightest of spaces.
Yet more practical touches enhance the cabin storage, with a floor-board cubby hole to organise oddments or hide valuables, and an illuminated glove box with optional cooling function.
Suite of safety technologies
Hyundai’s ix20 features a range of active and passive safety technologies. These systems are designed to avoid accidents, and to protect occupants in the event of an impact.
Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) steps in to help control the vehicle when necessary. The system applies braking power automatically to individual wheels to counter oversteer or understeer. Engine power is also adjusted automatically until control is regained.
ESP is combined with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which allows the driver to pull away smoothly on hills without the risk of rolling backwards. The system senses when the car is on an incline, and holds the brakes momentarily, until the car begins to move forwards.
The ix20 is also fitted with six airbags, including front, front side and curtain bags, affording high levels of protection for driver and passengers when it matters most. In the event of a rear-end collision, Active Headrests for the front seats can move forward and up to minimise head and neck injuries.
