Hyundai Europe Newsroom’s top 10 articles of 2017

Over the past twelve months, Hyundai Motor has unveiled a number of new models and introduced innovative technology to its cars, while the Hyundai Motorsport team finished second in the 2017 WRC.

Hyundai Motor has experienced an eventful past year, with a series of product launches including the All-New Kona, as well as the expansion of the i30 family with the introduction of the i30 Wagon, i30 Fastback, and i30 N. The company has also launched eco-friendly car sharing schemes in European capitals like Amsterdam and Vienna, while the Hyundai IONIQ has won awards for its environmental credentials.
As 2017 draws to a close, here are the top ten Hyundai Europe Newsroom stories from the last 12 months.

10. The Hyundai Kona World Premiere: how the press reacted


Back in June, Hyundai Motor invited automotive journalists from around the world to Milan for the world premiere of the All-New Hyundai Kona. Kona’s slogan is “You drive it. You define it”, and among those attending the launch were members of the Kona Gang; fashion bloggers, musicians and designers for whom a B-SUV like the All-New Kona is a perfect fit for their different creative lifestyles as the drivers of their own lives.

9. Kona by Hyundai: a true SUV with a progressive character


Ahead of the All-New Kona’s official unveiling in Milan, Hyundai Motor launched a teaser video showing some of its design details and highlighting its voluminous, aggressive body styling which features sleek and sharp shapes. 8. 350,000 first dates and the hearts of steel


This feature assessed Hyundai Motor’s European manufacturing facility in the Czech Republic, which is the most modern automotive plant in Europe and offers a glimpse into the future of car production. First opened in 2008, the HMMC facility in Nošovice produces up to 350,000 cars a year using advanced robots. The i30 five-door was manufactured here, and to mark its launch Hyundai created a 60-second video called ‘Hearts of Steel’ set in the factory and featuring two yellow industrial robots.

7. The Hyundai i30 Double World Premiere: how the press reacted


In July, Hyundai Motor hosted automotive journalists from across Europe at an event in Düsseldorf for not one, but two world premieres, where the company launched the two latest members of the i30 range: the i30 Fastback and i30 N. The i30 Fastback features a new body type that gives it a sophisticated twist with an elegant character, while i30 N is Hyundai’s first ever high-performance car under the N line-up.

6. Has the age of autonomous cars arrived?


In November 2016, Hyundai Motor introduced the Autonomous IONIQ concept at Automobility LA. Resembling the rest of the IONIQ line-up, the vehicle boasts a sleek design and is one of the few self-driving cars in development to have a hidden LiDAR system in its front bumper instead of on the roof, enabling it to look like any other car on the road. This feature, from January, assesses how we reached hyper-connected driverless cars, from the radio-controlled cars of the 1920s to the computer-controlled cars of the 1980s and 1990s – and beyond.

5. The evolution of gears: automatically smooth and fuel-efficient


The feature examined how the transmission is an essential part of any vehicle, and looked at the differences between manual and automatic. The article also reported on Hyundai Motor’s EcoShift dual clutch transmission. Originally designed for racing, it delivers quick, responsive shifts, while its state of the art technology combines the convenience of an automatic transmission with the efficiency and shift characteristics of a manual transmission. In addition to this, it lowers CO2 emissions by p to 20 per cent compared to a conventional six-gear automated transmission, while acceleration performance can be increased by up to 10 per cent.

3. From Mars to Vegas, the technology behind Hyundai’s self-driving IONIQ


In third place is another article about Hyundai Motor’s Autonomous IONIQ concept, which features a walkaround video that discusses its LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, which is also used in fields as diverse as map-making and planetary exploration. LiDAR uses lasers to illuminate a target or object, and can therefore measure distance, which makes it optimum for autonomous cars.

The second most popular Hyundai Europe Newsroom article of 2017 reported on how the reservation of 100 limited-edition Hyundai i30 N First Edition models, which began in Germany on 17 July, sold out after just two days.

The year’s most popular article looked at how technology can relieve the tension thrown up by driving. For many car owners, the daily commute can be stressful due to the amount of time wasted while sat in a traffic jam, while poor road and weather conditions can also have detrimental effects on stress levels behind the wheel. Thankfully, modern technologies are designed to make driving as stress-free a pursuit as possible.
