Hyundai at the Geneva International Motor Show through the years
Ahead of the 88th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show, we’ve taken a look at some of the most innovative models Hyundai Motor has debuted at the event in recent years.
Spread across seven halls, the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show takes place from 8 to 18 March at the Palexpo, a convention centre next to the city’s airport. The 2017 Geneva International Motor Show attracted more than 691,000 visitors from around the world, as well as 10,000 journalists from 93 countries.
This year, 180 exhibitors will showcase new car ranges and the latest automotive technology. Hyundai Motor will celebrate several world and European premieres. These include the All-New Kona Electric, which is the first fully-electric subcompact SUV on the European market; the All-New Nexo, which is the world’s first dedicated hydrogen-powered SUV, and the All-New Santa Fe.
The first Geneva International Motor Show, founded by the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles, was held in 1905, and it takes place every March. Throughout its history, it has played host to the latest technological and design developments in the automotive industry, from pioneering internal combustion-engined models to the benzene and steam-powered cars which have debuted under its roof.
Hyundai Motor has unveiled many new models at the Geneva International Motor Show over the decades, from much-loved production cars to boundary-pushing concepts. These are some of the company’s highlights from previous events.
Forefather to the IONIQ, the i-oniq concept, which debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, was an electric sport hatchback with a range-extending petrol engine. Fittingly for a sporty hatchback, the cabin layout was driver-oriented, with the dashboard and centre-console geometry based around the driver. The user-interface components reflect contemporary and future consumer electronics technology such as movement control mounted on the steering wheel, a floating instrument cluster with multi-layered projection, and a large background display for navigation, entertainment and other information.

2012 - Hyundai i-oniq

2014 - Hyundai Intrado concept
The Hyundai Intrado concept car was unveiled at the 84th Geneva Motor Show and signified a new direction for the brand by offering a vision of how cars will meet future mobility needs. Rather than simply being an exercise in style, Intrado demonstrated Hyundai’s belief that advanced vehicle technologies and intelligent design can combine to engage more effectively with both the driver and passengers.
2015 - Hyundai Tucson
At the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, Hyundai introduced the third-generation Tucson. Offering a completely updated design, the new Tucson featured a hexagonal grille, as well as LED headlights and taillights. Meanwhile, it offered 513 litres of space in the rear of the vehicle with the seats up. The brand also unveiled two concept variants: the Tucson 48 V Hybrid Concept and the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid Concept during the show.
2016 - Hyundai IONIQ
The 2016 Geneva Motor Show was witness to the world premiere of the IONIQ line-up, the world’s first vehicle platform with three electrified powertrains: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric. This was part of Hyundai’s pledge to make low-to-zero emission mobility accessible to everyone. Thanks to its use of innovative technological concepts, IONIQ boasts an uncompromised design and driving experience and offers customers the latest in connectivity and safety technologies.
2017 - Hyundai FE Fuel Cell Concept
Having established itself as a global leader for hydrogen transportation, Hyundai Motor unveiled its futuristic FE Fuel Cell Concept at last year’s Geneva Motor Show. The FE Fuel Cell Concept’s flowing form is inspired by nature and water - the car’s only emission - with its clean and calm design emphasising its non-polluting nature.
The ‘FE’ in the name stands for Future Eco, reflecting the innovative technologies that complement its eco-friendliness. One of its most notable characteristics is its internal air humidifier, which recycles water emitted by the car’s clean hydrogen energy circulation to create a more comfortable cabin environment.
