- More choice for electric mobility, and a new member of the i30 family. What else does Hyundai Motor have in store?
There were many exciting developments from Hyundai in 2016 with new innovations and world premieres of new models. 2017 is continuing in the same vein with the New Generation i30 creating headlines in Europe having gone into production at Hyundai’s manufacturing plant at Nošovice, Czech Republic.
Hyundai Motor has already turned heads with its strategy for future mobility showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. Self-driving vehicles, hyper-connected cars and advanced robots are a vision of the longer-term future.
Here are three more immediate highlights to look out for in the months ahead.
IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid
A new innovation in electric vehicle technology, the Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid and the IONIQ Electric are already on sale throughout Europe and the Plug-in Hybrid will be arriving soon. The IONIQ gives drivers a choice of three powertrains within a single model, one which has been picking up a string of awards. The IONIQ has already been named Norway’s Car of the Year 2017, a country which is leading the way for electric mobility in Europe. Like the hybrid, the IONIQ Plug-in will provide class-leading fuel efficiency and low C02 emissions of just 32 g/km (target value). It will also drive more than 50 km in pure electric mode providing both performance and piece of mind to a new breed of green-conscious drivers.
The i30 Family will offer a car for everyone
The first i30 began production at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech in Nošovice in 2008, the same year the plant opened. Almost two decades on, the New Generation i30 represents the core of Hyundai’s brand in Europe. Available since early 2017, it has been earning positive reaction in the press. Designed, developed, tested, and manufactured on the continent, the New Generation i30 will become a family of four unique models offering a choice to match the driver’s lifestyle. The next member of the family will be the i30 wagon which will be debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
And in the second half of 2017, Hyundai Motor will launch its first ever high performance version under the sub-brand N, which will deliver thrilling winding road fun as well as track day capable performance. The last member of the family will be a special model featuring a fastback body type that Hyundai Motor will launch at the beginning of 2018. The family is united by the same DNA of a timeless and coherent design.
Tucson special edition
The All-New Tucson is Hyundai Motor’s fastest-selling European model since sales began in September 2015. All Tucson's sold in Europe are built at Hyundai's facility in the Czech Republic, as Hyundai continues to build on its ambition to be the number one Asian brand on the continent. A special edition Tucson model will boast some stylish new design changes including dark metal accents for the interior, cloth seats with a new light grey stitching, and a perforated leather steering wheel with light grey stitching.
Hyundai Motor is taking fuel cell technology to the next level
Building on the success of the ix35 Fuel Cell, Hyundai Motor will launch the next generation fuel cell electric vehicle in 2018 enhancing its global leader position in fuel cell and zero emission technology with a dedicated model. Before the launch of the series model, Hyundai Motor will give offer a glimpse of what's to come with a unique concept car in the near future.
Hyundai Motorsport WRC
The 2016 WRC season was Hyundai Motorsport’s most competitive so far. The team earned two victories, 47 stage victories, and finished second in the Manufacturers’ Championship. Two rounds into the 2017 season, the Hyundai team has been unlucky not to earn a podium place with Dani Sordo securing a fourth-placed finish in Sweden. The team achieved six stage wins in Scandinavia, in addition to the seven in Monte-Carlo in the opening round.
Hyundai’s rally cars have evolved since their involvement in the 1990s and in the 2017 season, Hyundai Motorsport is fielding three Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC cars in each round of the championship which will no doubt see high-octane thrills and spills before coming to an exhilarating climax in Australia in November.
