Hyundai Motor is the Official Automotive Sponsor of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, and ahead of the tournament caught up with three former winners to discuss fan culture and football heritage.

Hyundai Motor Company recently announced the launch of the “Hyundai World Football Heritage” contest in the lead up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.
As part of the campaign, legendary football stars Thierry Henry, Cafu and Lukas Podolski starred in three videos to pay homage to their respective national teams’ heritage: France, Brazil and Germany.

How to root for your team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™

This is what three greats of the ‘beautiful game’ had to say about FIFA World Cup™ fan culture.

Thierry Henry, France

As a player, Thierry Henry won virtually every major honour in football for club and country, including the FIFA World Cup™ and UEFA European Championship™ with France. He was part of the 2003/04 Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ side that went unbeaten in the Premier League and remains the club’s record scorer. He later moved to Barcelona, where he won the UEFA Champions League.
Being able to play in front of my family, wearing that jersey in the stadium of the team I supported as a youngster – scoring a goal! To be part of a World Cup… there is no price at all.

Thierry Henry

During the video, Henry discusses the 1998 FIFA World Cup™ in his home nation, France, where he was part of the winning squad. He reminisces about scoring in the penalty shootout win against Italy in the quarter-finals, and shares some of his favourite football memorabilia, including Ronaldo’s shirt from the 1998 FIFA World Cup™ final.

Cafu, Brazil

In a career that spanned 20 years, Cafu redefined the role of a full-back, with his game built around attacking from the right flank. He played for two of the biggest clubs in Italy, Milan and Roma, and won the FIFA World Cup™ with Brazil twice, in the USA in 1994 before captaining the side in 2002 in South Korea and Japan.
In that moment, my only thought was about my family – where I came from. That kid from the favela, who had a chance to play in the 1994 World Cup Final… When you see in the crowd the joy, the positive feelings, it gives you a lot of strength.

Cafu

Cafu discusses his memories of playing in three FIFA World Cup™ finals – two of which he won. He says that the crowd play such an important role in spurring the players on to victory. Among his most treasured items are his captain’s armband from the 2002 final, and a samba drum.

Lukas Podolski, Germany

Lukas Podolski won 130 caps for Germany from 2004-2017, memorably scoring a rocket in his final match against England. After starting his career with FC Köln, he played for some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Inter Milan. He now plays in Japan for Vissel Kobe.
The German mentality is about the team behind the team… To hold the trophy in your hands with your son on the pitch, to share it with him at the Maracana was an eternal experience.

Lukas Podolski

In the video, Podolski introduces his keepsake from the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, a vuvuzela. After winning the tournament in 2014, the World Cup trophy is always with him, as he has it tattooed on his arm. He also cherishes his father’s ticket from the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, when the hosts played Poland, the country of his birth.
