The Walking Dead: how Hyundai helps you survive the zombie apocalypse

- The sixth season of “The Walking Dead”, the popular doomsday series and comic book adaptation, is currently airing.

The producers of the TV show have decided to split the current season, so that the eighth episode, out of 16 total, will be shown on November 29th, 2015, as the mid-season finale. The remaining eight episodes will be broadcast in the US starting on February 14th, 2016.
To bridge the three-month wait, let’s take a look at the Hyundai models that have been field-tested for the post-apocalypse, given that the predecessor to the current Hyundai Tucson has already proven itself a trusted companion in the fight against the zombies!

"Zombie Survival Machines" at Comic-Con

In addition to “The Walking Dead” special edition, Hyundai Motor has presented two other concept cars at Comic-Con conventions. In 2012, to commemorate the 100th issue of the comic book, the original Hyundai vehicle from the comic was recreated in collaboration with "The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman; it was presented in San Diego in all its glory. Based on a Hyundai Elantra Coupe, the survival machine was replicated in exact detail. With a spiked cowcatcher, knife blades on the wheels, metal bars covering the windows, a winch, additional lights on the roof, and an arsenal of weapons in the trunk, this Elantra Coupe is well-equipped to battle hordes of zombies.

As die-hard fans of the TV show know, a Hyundai Tucson plays a central role in the plot of the highly successful end-times series. Consequently, Hyundai Motor has made use of a zombie apocalypse theme on several occasions, in particular by building two spectacular concept cars and a "The Walking Dead" special edition.

The Hyundai Tucson from "The Walking Dead"

The vehicle from "The Walking Dead" is a 2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited. It was found by Karina and Paul, two characters in the series, near the little town of Rock Fort, Georgia. The Tucson later falls into the possession of Sheriff Nick Grimes, the main character, and is seen over and over again during the first four seasons of the series. It is a primary means of transportation for the survivors of the zombie apocalypse.

The special edition had exclusive graphics package, badging, floor and cargo mats, and even a backpack-style zombie survival kit.

"The Walking Dead" special edition of the Hyundai Tucson

In 2013, “The Walking Dead” special edition of the Hyundai Tucson premiered at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The occasion marked the ten-year anniversary of the comic book series. The special edition has an eye-catching paint job in "Ash Black Mica" and is adorned with various graphic elements. Blood red zombie handprints are on the front doors. The fuel cap is decorated with a skull donning a cowboy hat, a reference to the series’ main character: cowboy-hat-wearing Sheriff Rick Grimes. Directly above that, “Survivors” is written boldly. Bloody shoe prints on the floor mats, a black and red interior, and specific logos from "The Walking Dead" complete the aesthetics of the special edition. As a notable add-on, the car included a 72-hour survival kit consisting of, among other things, a backpack, drinking water, gloves, bandages, glow sticks, a rain poncho, tissues, and mouthwash (just in case).

The second, custom zombie survival machine debuted a year later in 2013 and was based on the Hyundai Santa Fe. This SUV for the end of the world was designed by Anson Kuo, and with the help of the American body shop specialists Galpin Auto Sports (GAS), it was turned into a reality for the New York Comic Con. Kuo's design was selected as the best zombie-mobile from thousands of DIY designs made with ‘The Walking Dead Chop Shop Configurator App’. The app gave more than 82,500 fans the ability to create their very own “The Walking Dead” car on the basis of different Hyundai models.
