2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ preview: France

Hyundai Motor is an official partner of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, and we’re continuing our preview of the major European contenders by taking a look at France’s chances of glory this summer.

We kicked off our 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ preview series by assessing the hopes of Germany, and this time we’re previewing France. Most pundits have Didier Deschamps’ squad as third favourites to lift the trophy, having last won it in 1998 when their manager captained the side on home turf.
This year’s FIFA World Cup™ final takes place at Moscow’s 81,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium. After finishing runners up at UEFA Euro 2016™ two years ago, can France go one better and emerge as winners this time?

France begin their campaign in Kazan

To the envy of other nations, France’s squad is filled to the brim with exciting talent and experience, including Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe. Their second XI alone would be expected to reach the latter stages of the tournament.

France are in Group C, and their first match is against Australia at the Kazan Arena on 16 June, followed by a clash with Peru at Yekaterinburg’s Ekaterinburg Arena on 21 June. Their final group game will see them take on Denmark in Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Can France win their second FIFA World Cup™?

As strong favourites to win their group, France are likely to avoid a Round of 16 tie with Lionel Messi’s Argentina and might face fellow Europeans Croatia or Iceland.
Things get potentially trickier in the quarter finals, where they could meet Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, 2010 winners Spain or hosts Russia. Should they surpass this challenge, they could be set up for a mouthwatering tie with Brazil in the semi-final.
If France do reach the final on the twentieth anniversary of their last (and so for only) FIFA World Cup™ win, they could face holders Germany or dark horses Belgium.
