Press material

Top safety, best value, and outstanding efficiency: As the world’s first car with three different electrified powertrains, IONIQ represented a major development in the field of electro-mobility.

While it’s true that IONIQ’s powertrain lineup represents significant savings in both CO2 emissions and fuel costs, elements related to the driving experience have received the most praise: specifically, its top-notch safety package, excellent overall value, award-winning design and its outstanding efficiency.

IONIQ is not only a low-emissions electric vehicle, it’s an overall good product as well. By providing good-quality electric vehicles at an attractive price point, Hyundai is actively driving the mobility revolution by making eco-friendly mobility available to more people.

Andreas-Christoph Hofmann Vice President Marketing & Product at Hyundai Motor Europe

IONIQ is available with a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or battery electric powertrain. The current generation IONIQ Electric has a 36 per cent increased energy capacity than the previous version and a real-world range of 311 km, thanks to an upgraded 38.3 kWh battery.

A 5-star NCAP safety rating

Following its launch in 2016, the Hyundai IONIQ immediately received a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, the highest score possible. In 2019 it received top marks again, following a product update. The model was praised for protecting its occupants and pedestrians alike, with all three powertrain variations ranking among the best in class. A long list of standard active safety features, seven different airbags, including an innovative driver-knee airbag, and a strong, impact-absorbing construction contributed to the model’s high rankings.

Price winner: IONIQ’s low cost of ownership

The excellent value for money IONIQ offers has kept it popular among customers. EurotaxGlass, CAP, Auto Bild and Schwacke have all praised the model for its ability to retain much of its original value year after year, and it was named Value Champion by Auto Bild and Schwacke two years in a row. The plug-in hybrid variation was named Affordable Hybrid Car of the Year at the 2018 Auto Express New Car Awards. In addition, the independent consumer analysis website Sust-it found that out of all the vehicle models available in Europe, IONIQ was cheapest to run, with an estimated operating cost of just EUR .02 per kilometre. This, compared with a competitive starting price point, keep the total cost of ownership for IONIQ relatively low.

IONIQ’s proves high efficiency in combination with latest design features and progressive powertrain technology

IONIQ’s is not just aerodynamic and streamlined to increase fuel efficiency, also the progressive powertrain solutions make it one of the most efficient cars globally.

The most striking design feature of IONIQ is its shape: its smooth lines and flowing shape make it not only look aerodynamic, but lend it a class-leading Cd value of 0.24, further increasing fuel efficiency by lowering the drag coefficient. Blue design accents gave it a modern and refined look, and natural air flow channels further emphasize the body lines. A 2019 product upgrade equipped the latest model with new front bumper and LED headlamp enhancements on the exterior and ambient blue lighting inside.

These traits did not go unnoticed by critics: Following its release, in 2016 IONIQ won the coveted Red Dot Design Award, and was praised for its clean lines and coupe-like silhouette. It also took home the Good Design Award two years running, in 2015 and 2016. IONIQ’s design was also a factor in it being named the Women’s World Car of the Year in both 2017 and 2018.

First mover to lay ground for new mobility solutions

The Hyundai IONIQ did not just prepare the ground for individual electrified mobility. All over Europe, it has offered a variety of new customers the opportunity to go electric.

In 2017, Hyundai provided over 100 IONIQ Electric units for its first EV car sharing fleet in Amsterdam. Based on the free-floating concept “IONIQ car sharing”, customers could collect and return their vehicle anywhere in the Amsterdam metropolitan area. In line with its global sustainability strategy for a cleaner future, Hyundai Motor helped improve air quality in the Dutch capital by making zero-emissions driving easily accessible.

Police departments in Spain, the Netherlands and the UK also drive emissions-free with the fully-electric version of IONIQ.

The vast number of use cases throughout Europe and the world place Hyundai among the leaders in the field of electric mobility. Thanks to the experiences gleaned and variety of use cases for IONIQ, in addition to consumer feedback, Hyundai is further able to implement customer needs into the next generation of electrified mobility. This does not just mean the driving experience: Hyundai’s partners and subsidiaries are closely cooperating with providers of infrastructure and home charging points, and Hyundai’s fleet business is able to provide customised EV solutions for business fleets.

The knowledge gathered from four years of IONIQ forms the strong foundation that allows Hyundai to be a comprehensive electric mobility provider in Europe.
