The Hyundai IONIQ applies good connectivity, smart safety and fun-to-drive abilities to an eco-friendly car, as well as providing alternative powertrain options.
Dennis Elsweier is Product Marketing Manager at Hyundai Motor Europe responsible for the IONIQ launch in Europe. He followed the IONIQ launch from an early stage in close collaboration with Hyundai's headquarters in Korea and was one of the first European team members to drive the prototype and discuss its new technologies with the engineers. In this video, Elsweier guides us through some of the technology features which are a perfect accompaniment to the Hyundai IONIQ’s beautiful design and impressive driving performance. These include a wireless charging functionality so you no longer need a cable to charge your phone in the car, as an inductive charging pad does it automatically.

With everything from entertainment podcasts to informative apps like road maps and travel data, the ability to connect our phones to our cars is now a much sought-after addition to our driving experience. For the first time, the Hyundai IONIQ offers both Apple Car Play and Android Auto, two systems that allow you to sync and operate key functions of your smartphone safely via the vehicle's screen. The car model also boasts a brand-new navigation platform with a central full-colour touch-screen.
I use my smartphone every day and especially while streaming music it’s perfect to just use the 8-inch screen and listen via the 8-speaker premium surround sound system.
Intelligent engineering and technology
Intelligent engineering is at the heart of the Hyundai IONIQ. Dynamic features include SPORT mode which transforms the look and feel of the displays to reflect the sportier driving performance. And the use of technology doesn’t just apply to the interior. The sporty and aerodynamic design is complemented by active air flaps and air curtains in the front grille to enhance efficiency along with the energy-saving LED rear lamps which also accentuate the IONIQ’s character.
Likewise, technology is playing an increasingly vital role in car safety. Hyundai's Elsweier explains that, in working to make the IONIQ exceptionally safe, they have standardised three advanced active safety features starting with AEB, Autonomous Emergency Braking, which not only detects obstacles such as other cars but also vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, or animals.
And with Smart Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist System, the IONIQ gives us a glimpse of what a future with driverless cars might look like.
Smart Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist System together mean a semi-autonomous driving experience at least for a few seconds, for safety reasons.
