The jury members, representing 31 countries across Europe, acknowledged the pioneering technology during the awards ceremony, which took place at the Autoworld Museum in Brussels, Belgium.

Hyundai is proud to receive this prestigious SAFETYBEST award for our new Rear Occupant Alert system. This life-saving feature goes beyond the industry’s commonly-offered safety technologies and demonstrates our commitment to provide the highest levels of safety for our customers and other road users.
Introduced on the All-New Santa Fe, which was launched in Europe last summer, the Rear Occupant Alert recognises the presence of passengers, animals and other objects in the rear of the cabin and alerts the driver when leaving the car if the rear doors are not opened. The AUTOBEST jury acclaimed the potential of this technology to prevent a driver leaving a child in the back seat, thus helping to protect children especially in hot conditions.
Presented every year since 2002, the SAFETYBEST award is one of the main awards in the annual prize-giving by AUTOBEST, recognising the continuous efforts of the car industry to improve vehicle safety.
Among other new safety systems, the All-New Santa Fe includes the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, which is a Hyundai first. When reversing out of areas with low visibility, the system not only warns the driver if vehicles approach from the rear – it also applies the brakes automatically. The Safety Exit Assist prevents accidents when vehicles approach from behind by temporarily locking the doors before being opened so that passengers will exit the car safely. All features are part of the Hyundai SmartSense active safety and driving assistance technologies.
