Hyundai Motorsport is ready to light up the streets of Copenhagen in the third round of the 2021 PURE ETCR season next weekend (August 6-8).

The event marks both the halfway point of an exciting season and the first street circuit on the PURE ETCR calendar. It also sees the team return to the location where it first announced its participation in the series with the Hyundai Veloster N ETCR in October 2020. The Bellahøj Park venue is situated 5km outside of the central business district of the Danish capital and has hosted the country’s flagship motorsport event, the Historic Grand Prix, since 2013.

Hyundai Motorsport is still on the hunt for its first King of the Weekend honour and the lead of the manufacturers’ standings. Last time out at MotorLand Aragón, the team significantly increased its points haul as all four drivers registered victories with the Hyundai Veloster N ETCR.

Augusto Farfus missed out on the coveted King of the Weekend crown by just two points having won his Round 2 Battle and the Super Final. Teammate Tom Chilton joined him in Pool A and was also victorious in his second Battle, and went on to narrowly miss out on third in the Super Final after a photo finish.

John Filippi was first across the finish line in his first Battle and was firmly in the heart of the action in the Pool B Super Final, where he gained two positions within the first lap. His teammate Jean-Karl Vernay claimed pole position for the final race, having been unable to take part in his second Battle due to a broken driveshaft, and crossed the line in second place.

The team currently sits in second place in the manufacturers’ standings with Jean-Karl Vernay also second in the drivers’ championship. The team aims to continue its form in Copenhagen and overhaul the 41-points deficit to the lead of the standings.

The Copenhagen PURE ETCR Draw will take place on the evening of Thursday 5 August to decide the two Pools for the weekend. Drivers will have a chance to learn the new circuit in two free practice sessions on Friday, before the Battles of Rounds 1 and 2 on Saturday 7 August. Round 3’s time trial on the morning of Sunday 8 August will set the starting grid for Round 4’s Super Finals.

Copenhagen has a special role in our PURE ETCR journey, as it was where we first announced our participation in the all-new series with our first-ever electric racing car. It will be a true pleasure for us to return next weekend, and we hope to have another successful event. We have started to find our feet in the series and as we head into the halfway point of the season, our goal is to continue the strong form we demonstrated in Aragón. As our first street circuit of the season, everyone will be on a steep learning curve in Copenhagen, as no team or driver has previous experience racing at Bellahøj Park. The Hyundai Veloster N ETCR is capable of scoring more victories, and all four of our drivers can be in contention for King of the Weekend, as we bid to claim the lead of both championships.

Stefan Ph. Henrich Hyundai Motorsport Director of Marketing and PR

I think this is going to be a really interesting round of the PURE ETCR championship. I love street circuits so that will be great fun. Looking at the map of the track, it should be very fast with just a few corners. I can’t wait to be there and discover Copenhagen. We will continue pushing to try to win our first event. Our target is to be leading the championship at the end of the weekend, and I believe we are in a good position to do this.

Jean-Karl Vernay

We are now at the midpoint of the season and I’m happy with my evolution and what we have learned as a team in PURE ETCR. Our first street circuit will be a big challenge, as we have never driven on this type of track with the Hyundai Veloster N ETCR. I expect we will have low grip and bumpy tarmac, and if we don’t get into a good rhythm quickly we will have a tricky weekend. That has to be the goal from the first free practice session, as this will be how we secure King of the Weekend.

John Filippi

Copenhagen will be very special event because we are returning to the location where PURE ETCR was launched twelve months ago. It will be a challenge because it is the first time we will drive the Hyundai Veloster N ETCR car on a street circuit. We head to this round on a positive note. We have been improving our performance and getting stronger over the first two rounds. We still haven’t managed to get a King of the Weekend victory, and this is clearly our mission for Copenhagen. First, we have to learn the track quickly to execute the best race weekend.

Augusto Farfus

There are two reasons why I am excited to go to Copenhagen; it will be my first time in Denmark, and our first street circuit in PURE ETCR. I love them – racing a car flat out when you’re skimming the barriers is about as exciting as it gets. This will be a new challenge – the Hyundai Veloster N ETCR accelerates very quickly and as it is heavy, it will probably feel like the car doesn’t want to stop. Due to the nature of the track, I think Round 3 is going to be really important to get the best starting position for Round 4, as this is where we score the most points. I can’t wait!
