As the main sponsor of the Korean Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia since 2015, Hyundai Motor Company has reaffirmed its longstanding support for the contemporary arts and culture festival.

As the main sponsor of the Korean Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia since 2015, Hyundai Motor Company has reaffirmed its longstanding support for the contemporary arts and culture festival, with this year’s Korean Pavilion exploring questions of East Asian modernity and histories through gender-focused critique and reflection.

The 58th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia (Venice Biennale) is curated by Ralph Rugoff, and runs from May 11 to Nov. 24 under the title: “May You Live in Interesting Times.” This year’s event features artists and commissioners representing 90 nationalities, and its main exhibition will illuminate the works of 79 artists from around the world. 

The International Art Exhibition in Venice, known as “the Olympics of the art world,” occurs every two years (in odd-numbered years), and is regarded as a premier global event, with artists from different corners of the world and national pavilions shining light on their artists’ creative endeavors.

The exhibition will aim to underscore the idea that the meaning of artworks are not embedded principally in objects, but in conversations – first between artist and artwork, and then between artwork and audience, and later between different publics. Ultimately, Biennale Arte 2019 aspires to the ideal that what is most important about an exhibition is not what it puts on display, but how audiences can use their experience of the exhibition afterwards, to confront everyday realities from expanded viewpoints and with new energies. An exhibition should open people’s eyes to previously unconsidered ways of being in the world and thus change their view of that world.

Korean Pavilion: ‘History Has Failed Us, But No Matter’

Under the title “History Has Failed Us, but No Matter,” the Korean Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia is curated by Hyunjin Kim, Lead Curator for Asia at interdisciplinary contemporary art foundation Kadist. 

Three women artists – siren eun young jung, Hwayeon Nam, and Jane Jin Kaisen – approach their works at the Korean Pavilion around the central question: “Who canonized the formation of history, and whose bodies are yet to be written about as part of that story?” While challenging norms of the male-dominated society and of the West, the exhibit investigates how traditions are invented by modernity, and explores the emancipatory potential of Asian traditions through a gender-complex perspective that falls outside the purview of Western modernity.

The Korean Pavilion at Biennale Arte 2017 (the 57th International Art Exhibition) presented the works of artists Cody Choi and Lee Wan, commissioned by Arts Council Korea and curated by Hyundai Motor’s Art Director, Daehyung Lee. In 2015, it highlighted the works of artists Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho, commissioned and curated by Dr Sook-Kyung Lee, who currently leads the Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational.

La Biennale di Venezia and beyond

Through its continuing support for La Biennale di Venezia, Hyundai Motor demonstrates its dedication and support for global art communities. As part of efforts to make art more accessible to the public, the Biennale is one of several long-term partnerships that Hyundai has established since 2013. Other notable partnerships include those with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA); the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); and Tate in London. Hyundai Motor also supports numerous art projects, initiatives and prizes worldwide.

The MMCA Hyundai Motor Series allows Korean artists to introduce their individual works, also acting as a platform for boosting international engagement and awareness. The Hyundai Project at LACMA supports Korean Art Scholarship and Art + Technology programs. At Tate Modern, the Hyundai Commission enables one artist every year to present a site-specific installation inside the museum's imposing Turbine Hall.

Through 2019, other significant exhibitions supported by Hyundai Motor include: at LACMA (from June) – a sponsorship of the first Korean calligraphy exhibition outside of Korea, “Beyond Line: The Art of Korean Writing”; at Tate Modern (from October) – the fifth Hyundai Commission by Kara Walker; and at MMCA Seoul (from October) – an unveiling of video and photo and other works by Park Chan-kyong.
