5 things that make the IONIQ Electric so eco-friendly

Hyundai’s IONIQ range has been racking up awards since it launched and the electric version recently won two more prestigious gongs. Find out why the IONIQ Electric is so environmentally friendly.

The demand for electric cars is on an upward curve in Europe. For example, in the UK, the nextgreencar website states that new registrations of plug-in cars increased from 3,500 in 2013 to more than 125,000 by the end of November 2017.
The Hyundai IONIQ is the world’s first car with a choice of three electrified powertrains; hybrid, electric and plug-in. After the launch of the IONIQ Hybrid and Electric versions in 2016, the line-up was completed by the IONIQ Plug-in’s arrival in European showrooms in summer 2017.
Hyundai’s IONIQ range has been recognised in a variety of award categories such as receiving the prestigious Red Dot award for design and has picked up numerous Car of the Year accolades across the continent including in Norway and the Czech Republic.
Two latest awards have recognised the IONIQ Electric’s environmentally-friendly attributes. The IONIQ Electric recently won the 'Green Car of the Year' award from Professional Driver magazine, and was named 'Supreme Award Winner' in the 2017 Women's Car of the Year contest, also winning in the Green Car category.
In awarding the IONIQ Electric its ‘Green Car of the Year’ Professional Driver Magazine used a 100-strong panel of industry operators, experienced chauffeurs and carefully-chosen editors, who ranked more than 60 candidate vehicles following comprehensive real-world testing. It stated that “the capabilities of the zero-emission IONIQ Electric are perfect for those focused on reducing their carbon footprint and tax rates.”
The Women’s World Car of the Year is the only car award in the world with an all-female jury. The jury consists of 25 established motor journalists from 20 different countries. It voted the IONIQ Electric as the winner in its Green Car category before also declaring the IONIQ as its ‘Supreme Award Winner’.
With the automotive industry recognising the IONIQ for its environmentally-friendly ethos, here are five areas which make the Hyundai IONIQ Electric a hit with eco-conscious drivers.

1. Emissions

The Hyundai IONIQ Electric produces no CO2 emissions, one of the biggest pollutants caused by conventional traffic. Electric vehicles (EVs) don’t even need an exhaust pipe. It contains a battery which can be charged from a socket, and does not have an internal combustion engine.

2. Range

In the past, doubts persisted about how far an electric car could drive until it needed charging compared to conventional vehicles. The IONIQ Electric gives piece of mind to eco-conscious drivers as it can travel 280 km on a single charge, easily usable for inner-city commuting or day trips.

3. Europeans embracing EV

Recharging infrastructure such as on-street charging is on the increase across Europe. A draft EU directive proposes that every new or refurbished home in the continent should be equipped with an electric vehicle charging point and by 2023, 10% of parking spaces in new buildings will also need to install charging facilities. Hyundai Motor recently launched its first pure-electric car sharing service in metropolitan Amsterdam by supplying 100 IONIQ Electric vehicles to the Dutch city.

4. Recycling energy

When an IONIQ Electric driver presses on the brakes, the battery also charges. Kinetic energy is converted and stored in the IONIQ’s battery, giving drivers an extra boost of power when they need it.

5. Eco-friendly materials

The innovative use of natural materials in the IONIQ Electric’s interior adds to its green credentials and makes it less reliant on oil-based products. For example, recycled plastic is combined with powdered wood and volcanic stone for the inside door covers. Raw materials extracted from sugar cane are used on the headlining and carpet which actually improve the quality of air inside the car and the recyclability of vehicle parts. Meanwhile some of the IONIQ’s lustrous metallic colours are achieved with paint using ingredients extracted from soybean oil.
The IONIQ is part of Hyundai Motor’s global sustainability strategy to launch 15 new eco models by the year 2020.
