2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ preview: Spain

Our 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ preview series has so far looked at Germany, France and England’s chances of glory, and this time we’re previewing 2010 world champions Spain. After a disappointing defence of their title in 2014, Julen Lopetegui’s side are expected to fare far better this time around. Their squad features a blend of youth and experience, and they are considered one of the dozen sides capable of going all the way.
This year’s FIFA World Cup™ final takes place at Moscow’s 81,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium. After a disappointing performance at UEFA Euro 2016™ that saw them knocked out by Italy in the second round, can Spain reach the latter stages of the tournament this time?
Hyundai Motor is an official partner of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, and our fourth preview of the major European contenders assesses the hopes and dreams of Spain.

Spain's campaign begins in Sochi

With experienced heads like Andres Iniesta, David Silva and Sergio Ramos, as well as the likes of Isco, Thiago and David De Gea, Spain boast a wealth of world-class talent. After two underwhelming tournaments, the side is expected to put in a strong showing this summer. However, to emerge top of Group B, they'll have to finish ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.
Spain’s first match is against their geographical neighbours Portugal at Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi on 15 June. This is followed by a clash with Iran at the Kazan Arena on 20 June, before their final group game against Morocco in Kaliningrad on 25 June.

Can Spain emerge victorious in Russia?

Spain are favourites to emerge as Group B winners ahead of UEFA Euro 2016™ winners Portugal and are likely to face hosts Russia or Uruguay in the second round. They could meet France or Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the quarter-finals, and if they navigate their way past that hurdle, could face the holders Germany in the semi-final.
Should Spain reach the final, they may end up playing five-time champions Brazil, led by the world’s most expensive player, Neymar. Despite a potentially tricky route to FIFA World Cup™ glory, Spain will be confident they have the quality to go far in the tournament.
